How low to go (squatting question) 15 January 2012 20:07 (permalink)
I’ve been training around 9-10 months initially on the Mark Rippletoe ‘Starting Strength’ and now Frankie’s 5x5 and I have always been doing squats which were taught to me by a trainer in my first few months. Now my question is am I getting the full benefit out of them as I do not squat all the way down near to the floor, mine which in all honesty are the same as 90% of folks in my gym are legs just slightly higher than parallel.

I can currently squat around 130kg like this but is it worth me dropping the weight and re-learning to squat all the way down, so it’s taking a step back to move forwards.

Any comments?

I imagined that this is the best way but maybe I was putting it off and sticking to what I know but now I think I shall drop the weight considerably and learn to go lower.

I agree, go as low as you can, more range of movement the better but definitely AT LEAST parallel.

Drop the weight and concentrate on technique first and foremost, when you complete sets/reps increase the weight steadily each session.

I did exactly this when I started Stronglifts 5 weeks ago and I'm already back to my old PB doing a much bigger range of motion and my legs have responded by growing an inch.

As long as it's below parallel, it should be fine; A2G is difficult for some to achieve and will depend on your flexibility, once the lower back starts to round and you butt wink, it's time to call a halt to your squat depth.
