I'd much prefer to have heavy dumbbells passed to me. Pain in the ass otherwise.

Im the opposite, much prefer to get them in position myself, only time it is a bit of a pain is on incline, where i just slam them into my chest then press them, not pretty, but luckily it's only for the first rep.

Question is, how do you get 200kg worth of DB's off the ground?  I struggle getting the 60kg ones up with assistace LOL

Someone who struggles using 30kg DBs would say the same thing about using the 60's. It's all relative.

150lb dumbbells = 300lbs together...divide by 2.2

= 136kg

Wow, 200kg.  Has this EVER been done?  Surely this would be a record?

There's videos on youtube of Ronnie Coleman doing 200lb (90kg) dumbbells for reps. That's a combined weight of 180kg. For reps, not a one rep max. And he is a bodybuilder who's goal is hypertrophy, not strength. So, I'd be very very surprised if 200kg DB Press hasn't been done before, and I doubt it's any kind of record. Furthermore, the Bench press world record is like 487kg, over twice 200, so there are clearly guys out there strong enough to do 200kg DB Press, and then some.

EDIT: found the vid.

I can only do 35kg x2 on my own but if one is passed to me I can do 42.5 x2 for 5 reps on incline.

I alway feel that I gonna cause myself an injury trying to get them in the air for the first rep on my own once over 35s

Yep thats the reason this exercise is harder to do. I for one am of the opinion that if you can't get the dumbbells off the ground and into the air yourself, then you can't do the exercise, simple as that. If you're not strong enough to lift the weight then don't lift the weight! Just my opinion though, and it's prob a result of the fact that I train alone most of the time anyway!

Im sure ive seen a vid where dexter jackson says he gets his dumbbells handed to him when he is working shoulders and he is Mr.O (think it was road to olympia 2007). Personaly think you should get them in place yourself.

i dont think this is the case, because lifting the weights up into position is not part of the exercise is it!for instance using a bar, with say 100kg on it, i would like to see anyone lift that up on their own into position without using a rack!

You seem to be confused, lifting the dumbbells, swinging them into position and then benching them is part of dumbbell benching. Doing a power-clean to get a barbell up and then squatting it is not part of the exercise because you have done another lift on its own to get them into position.

Dumbbell benching is hard because it does not have the nonsense/cheating associated with barbell benching where you see a guy benching 100kg on youtube assisted by 4 spotters. Nor do you have people listing their ass off the bench to reduce the ROM. Nor do you have people wearing the benching shirt to lift them.

Its just you and the heavy irons in the dumbbell game.

This is a good vid of getting the dumbbells into place and benching them. I remember struggling with the 40 kgs a while back, swinging them into place only for them to be stuck like stones at the place you press them up. Yet I was comfortably benching 80kg on the barbell. It would have been easy to have them handed to me at the top but I had to soldier on.

My sentiments exactly. And I quite like the phrase "the dumbbell game", I may have to rob it from you

At the end of the day, people DB press for their chest/shoulders/triceps. However they get them into position makes zero difference. The point of the exercise is to develop the muscles around the chest/shoulder girdle, getting DB's into position should not limit the primary function of the exercise. Thus if I can press the 50's x 10 getting them up myself but i cant get the 55's into place easily, id get them handed to me.
22.5kg to go.

Thats fair enough and I hear what your saying, I train alone on all but incline DB bench press.

I have an old rotor cuff problem that I have to be careful with so just feel its alot safer with assistance.
Swinging them into place on incline always feels well dodgy to me.

I'm not sure the "getting the dbs into place" is really part of the lift itself.

Having said that, it's a great lift, no mistake.

40kgs x5 for me, if it was any heavier I'd have trouble getting going without assistance, so I tend to stick to 5+ reps, and usually 10 ish.

40kg in each hand for incline press though I reckon I could go above 42.5 if I was having them handed to me.
