How much money do you spend on body building supplements each month? 04 November 2009 13:48 (permalink)
Alright Guys,

After working out that I spend roughly £100 per month on supps, it got me thinking about how much everyone else tends to spend on supps... basically, am I spending an average amount, or higher compared to most other peeps on here?

I'm talkiing about supps like Protein powders, creatine, Pre WO supps, amino acids, dextrose, vits etc etc... so don't include things like gear or DS/PH.

Should be interesting to see.

Cheers

I tend to go through a 2.27kg tub of whey each month and is the only supplement i use, so spend about £28 a month or so.

Wow... looks like i'm really over spending compared to you guys!

I use 5kg MP whey protein within about 6 weeks, also a 2.kg of milk protein around every 6 weeks too.

Other than that, I use dextrose before and after training, I also use glutamine, some times creatine, beta alanine, and also supplement with vitamins (C,E,B complex, ZMA, multi, fish oils, EFA's etc).

fcuk knows too much, probably about £80-100 when EFA's and vits are taken into consideration

Can you really classify protein powder as spending on "supplements"?

Its part of diet - i.e. protein powder works out at (obviously there's a lot of variety), approximately 50p per 35g's of actual, physical protein. This compares to £1 per chicken breast (also 35g's of protein) at Asda. Without buying protein powder, you'd be spending a lot more money on steak, chicken etc. since all those other sources of protein are far, far more expensive.

When you consider protein powder is on the whole a milk derivative (and hence diary), I'd say it's worth considering less a supplement and more part of the weekly food budget. It's not something that's used as a supplement, but a "staple" component of most bodybuilder's diets (including mine - I have 2-3 shakes per day to make up protein totals).

Obviously this will be interpretted as "pro-sups" - but facing facts, it's the cheapest way to get in a quality protein source.

I usually spend around 80 - 100 quid on supplements a month (if you include Protein Powder as Thai Fighter has said above).

People usually find this alot of money, but I dont go out drinking in clubs or pubs very often, so its really only two nights on the beer and I know what I would prefer.  (Not the beer :-))

I think some of you do some very expensive shi..s.

I've been training for a year and I only use Reflex Instant Whey as a supplement. I think it's important to understand that supplement means in addition not a replacement.

I eat lots of eggs, chicken and tuna and sometimes steak.

I train at home 3 times a week and my 18" arms are an indicator I must be doing at least something about right. I'm 5'11, 14 stone and 40 years old.

I don't want to give the wrong impression as I'm not one for measurements and I only know my arm size as my wife measured them when she was measuring my wrist in preparation for a new oversized watch.
My indication of progress is my wardrobe, i've gone up 2 shirt sizes since I began.

Jeez, the supplement manufacturers must be rubbing their hands with glee.

It's their job to convince you that you need a whole shed load of stuff that you either don't really need or are already getting from your food.

Couldn't the same be said of gyms?

                            http://www.rosstraining.com/nevergymless.html

I used the above program for a period of 3 months or so once, and it worked very well. I use weights and the gym because I prefer training in that way - but you don't need a gym to stay / become fit and althletic (or muscular).

                            People use supplements because they:

                            1) Give them a bit of a helping hand when working out - e.g. Gakic, creatine etc.
                            2) Make their life simpler and more convenient - e.g. MRP's, protein "flapjacks", protein shakes etc.
                            3) Enjoy using them! Hence....why any free sample offers ever publicised on MT get snapped up rapidly.

Tbh, the anti-supplement propaganda does get annoying - principally because this is a low-margin industry compared to many others than people do not have a problem with. The *net* margin on supplement sales is far lower than that in most other niche markets because it's extremely price competitive. It's extremely price competitive because most people purchasing supplements do so every month and compare prices.

The biggest irony of all is that far from "rubbing their hands", most supplement retailers and manufacturers are staffed and run by people who are EPIC supplement users. A picture of my kitchen would demonstrate that.

not including Whey, then I wouldn't say I spend that much

                                maybe about £150 a year

I do spend more when budget allows

You make a very good point mate, and I completley agree that the protein is part of important nutrition which you would otherwise have to get from foods.

I just wanted to know how much ppl spend on it all, as some ppl hardly use shakes and just eat a sh*t load tuna etc.

Personally I have 4 - 5 shakes per day (5 on a training day) so as you can imagine, I use a lot of the stuff.

not including Whey, then I wouldn't say I spend that much

                                    maybe about £150 a year

I do spend more when budget allows

I was including protein though mate, this is probably the largest part of anyones supplement spend, so definately add this in :-)

Jeez, the supplement manufacturers must be rubbing their hands with glee.

It's their job to convince you that you need a whole shed load of stuff that you either don't really need or are already getting from your food.

I do agree with this to some extent. I personally think that there are only a handful of supps that are worth spending money on.

As far as protein powders go though (and I assume that this what takes up most of our money for supps) it is a completely necessary supplement for 99% of us, as making/eating a meal with high protein content every 2-3 hours, just doesnt fit into most ppls lives, and as Thaifighter said, it would most likely cost a lot more to do it that whey (see what I did there :-p ).
