Humor, craic, banter, whats you limits ? 01 April 2012 22:28 (permalink)
[Helpful answer received] / [List Solutions Only]
Are you oblivious to everyone's feelings when it comes to a laugh with the boys or girls etc etc, is there no joke that will make you cringe ? This comes from a thread today when without any intention to cause offense I did, I wrote just as I would talk to my mates, not really thinking..........So basically is humor a "local" thing, I know being Irish I laugh loudest at myself, so see no harm in laughing at others, is this an Irish, Gaelic trait as I know Scottish and Welsh guys who are the same, everything and anyone is fair game and that's just the way its always been, men in the company of men, in the mess, in the taxi depot..........or are we losing this gift to political correctness ?

I have a professional group of mates and the banter and craic is without political correctness.

People will get ripped for being fat, being black, being asian, having a big nose, looking like a jew, being Welsh (that is the most popular - and is aimed at me!), being old, being young, being too stupid, being too clever,

Today, at lunch, conversation included the paralympic games (with distasteful jokes) and a suggestion of 'Come stereotype with Me' as the theme for a come dine with me tournie we are doing. Also, talk surrounding
one of the young lady's private parts - and setting up a twitter account for it.
It is often bordering on obscene - yet we are entirely culturally diverse and would certainly never judge anyone based on colour, disability or race. It is simply 'the craic'.

I to am without limits I couldnt give a monkey espeically on things like forums and facebook. Me and my mates play a great game called Arse Top Trumps every day where we post pics of lovely ladies behinds and highest score for the day takes home a moral victory.

Had a huge row with the missus at the weekend because she said I was inappropriate and made her look bad for associating with me. All this started because I wrote regarding the whitney houston thing.

Yet my lad mates and I have tonnes of craic I wonder if its more a male vs female thing. The female mates who I have banter with are obscene worse than their male contemporaries but 95% of them just dont get it.

Ive learnt on here (or been told) to tone down my craic because people just dont take to it but then again i 'used' to get alot of PMs from old members on here saying that they quite liked my humor on here but for about a year or so more i have toned it down because i dont want to get banned again.

I do see what your getting at OP, theres a bunch on here that just love nothing more than sitting behind theyre computers and nit pick at most posts just so they can stick theyre chest out while sitting at theyre computer saying to themselves 'ive just put him in his place',lol. These guys need to get out into teh real world more and start enjoying themselves.

Iremember a thread not to long ago on here where alot where complaining about remarks about women, gay people etc.. and they even went to teh extent to phone MT's office. I had to sit back and say t myself 'are these people serious'. Its teh internet ffs, if i phoned up james everytime i get stick or some bad comments said about me on here, i'd have a very big phonebill. When i get them , i just laugh ffs , because it doesnt really matter.

I think its one of teh reasons why this forum is really quite this last year and others have been very busy. I know it may be difficult for teh owners of teh site but when you think about where teh money comes from for teh owners , its all advertisments for sites that get the most traffic  so if it where me, id be telling the complainers to man up and give your head a shake because 'its only banter' and if they start getting to strict then teh bills wont be getting paid and thats all down to people reading into to much of peoples posts

I like to have a good laugh and many friends etc... can be very near the knuckle I think its really down to how well you know someone and the intention behind what you are saying. In person its much easier to gauge and get a feeling for something whereas in a virtual environment not so easy and obviously things are much more open where many people will/could be reading and maybe not on the same "wave length" as your mates in a pub etc...

So for that reason I try to behave myself on places like this whereas I will act accordingly or dependent on the group of people I'm with in a "real" life situation.

Nothing is off limits with me . It's all about the intent behind the joke or comment . If its aimed to be mean then that's different .

Mostly got in trouble in England...they simply do not get NI craic / sarcasm at all.

This. Sick jokes are almost like a competitive sport for a lot of men, but as long as that's all it is then fine. I will laugh at a racist joke if it's funny, but if I saw someone genuinely speaking or acting in a racist manner towards someone I would be disgusted.

But thats the point Govinda/Keyser many people will not share your opinions and/or point of view and thus not your humour, therefore you never know how things might be taken around certain topics or in the way you may say something even just mean't as a joke. I think most of us realise when this could happen but the internet is a very different place.

In "real life" if it was me and I thought you were taking the piss I'd tell you so and/or just insult you back, on the internet things are somewhat different whether you agree with it or not. Personally I also think some people have a habit of coming across as more "obnoxious" on the net than they do in person.

There is one hell of a difference between having a laugh and banter with people who know you or are in a direct circle of friends.  Compared with posting views or comments on a public forum.  You may not think anything of the comments you made because it means nothing to you.  That is where respect comes in, it will mean something to who you mock.

There will always be people with like minded views or ideals because it does not affect you directly, therefore it does not affect you but to post them on a forum where they are going to cause offense to someone else is an entirely different thing.  It is a reason why so many people do not join or air their views and a reason why you should actually think before posting.

You have been banned before Keyser and are back, so that says something about the site.  However that said, you have to respect the community as a whole, it is entirely different to the accepted banter within your group of mates.  Glad the banning made you see this.  Remember your idea of a joke is not the same as someone elses.  A modicum of thought about others sexuality, color or whatever, makes one hell of a difference.

Please don't be surprised when you are pulled up with what you believe is an innocent joke - someone may find it offensive and may challenge you.  Try not to go on the defensive defending it.  Someone has found it derogatory, accept that and try to learn that what you find acceptable is not what someone else does - that is the point I think.

Locally its however gets it and finds it funny, yes it is being diluted away a tad.
Personally I will joke with anyone that is in on the Joke and takes it as a Joke.

Like anyone stuff that shudnt make me laugh raises a smile at times but that Human nature at work, accept it and dont take it to heart.
to take it to heart ends up changing stuff for the worst.

Like when your not allowed xmas cards at work in case it offends but no one from any group has complained,Just someone in an office who thinks they are being PC.

Also its place and person dependent, You dont joke at work like you do out of work.

On FP i joke some of its not welcome here which is fine the line is clear for all on both sites.

The current gore daft jokes like 4chan have some appeal just out of pure daftness, nothing more, but if your not used to it or dont accept the tone in which its set then its not for you, maybe dont mean its wrong.

Like in the forces you get stick for your colour, size, race, region but in the end no one takes offense ,people realise you have more in common than apart in just an in joke.
the same people lay their lifes on the line for the guy they hace just ripped.

of course in the past this has gone to far which is wrong, but sometimes the dark humor makes people closer and bonds people.

Everyone has been in shape, but not everyone is IN shape, its about where your going not where you have been.

I honestly do get what your saying here pea but i would say that the majority would just like to joke away what way and make this place abit better for teh craic. Its teh minority who are the ones complaining IMO but then we all have to fall into line because when they complain, teh mods have to act. Tehers anonther forum that many people are also on and we can banter away like we want and that forum is flying at the moment. Yes it does have its moments where people get pulled up for saying something thats totaly out of order. I think people on here who see something offensive should look at it from a joking point of view. Ffs the world would be a dull place if we all had to watch what we say.

As for me getting banned, ill stick my kneck out here but i dont think ive ever been banned for any rasist comments, being abusive to other members. Its only when the sh1te from teh north gets mentioned and i give my view and sometimes go to far politically which is against teh rules .I do try and watch what i say and i hope you agree that my posts are alot better than what they used to be when i 1st joined. All im saying is that people need to look at posts with a pintch of salt because the minority are slowy destroying this site with all theyre complaints. Alot will say im full crap here but teh traffic speaks for itself .

Then answer me this - at who's expense are you joking?  I don't think it is a majority.  If you want this so called crack/craic then why are you here?  Go back to the other forum and why did you come back after your ban?

You probably only mean the traffic in General - MT is a big site, its not just general you know and maybe, just maybe that is slow because of the crap which you find perfectly acceptable - just a thought?  Plus it is interesting to read these other forums, because you begin to realise what someone's true colours really are.
