I need to lose weight - not just fat! Help please

I am needing to lose weight for a medical at my work, unfortunately they are still old school and go by BMI. I would like to burn fat off but overall I need to physically lose weight. Would the Stronglifts program and cardio suffice along with strict clean diet of course. I am just scared of lifting heavy when needing to lose weight as I just think that would put weight on me!

I'm dropping weight using the couch to 5k running program! By Cool running! Im on my 4th week of 9, dropped 3% body fat (from 18 to 15%) GL Matt

Do you know the date of the medical? If you do you can lose a lot of water weight in the days before it by sitting in a sauna fully clothed. A favourite of mine to drop water fast was to go hiking wearing a bin bag under a few layers of clothes with a back pack full of weights - great for low intensity fat burning and the sweat pours off you so you'll lose any subcutaneous water you might be holding which will bring your weight down. You just have to remember to drink a lot of water to stay hydrated which sounds like an oxymoron but the more you drink the more you lose in sweat. Water loss is simply a quick fix and not something I'd advocate doing for extended periods or repeating a lot. And you should still lift heavy in the gym - you wont put on significant mass unless your calories allow that and the exercise will aid in fat loss. It's a shame that potentially you may have to sacrifice parts of your physique to suit a BMI test though! So out dated!

Yeah that's a shame, really old school the BMI! I agree I'd still stick to decent weights but maybe more of a high rep routine and a fair amount of cardio. Like Robbie says, you could manipulate things with your hydration / sweat etc. You could try a bodybuilding style of water load then deplete and drop a couple of kg's of water if you want to go down that path - it's tricky to get right but if you're desperate might be worth considering.
