Iain K's Powerlifting - 15 April 2008 15:47
I am enjoying posting on MT and post on a few training logs here so have decided to put my log on here as well as sugdenbarbell and powerandbulk.

I am an unequipped powerlifter currently lifting in the 90kg class for both BWLA and BDFPA. The sunday before last I lifted in BDFPA unequipped finals placing 2nd, whilst I am also the BWLA unequipped champ at 90kg (held last sept).

My best lifts are 230kg squat, 142.5kg bench press (gym pb 150) and 260kg deadlift with a best total of 632.5kg.

The next comp on the horizon is the EDFPA unequipped champs which will be held on 21-22nd of june near Dublin. I also have a gym comp in may which will contested by floor to overhead anyway lift and deadlift. Beyond that there will be my entry into equipped lifting, probably at my BWLA divisonals in the autumn.

Here's a couple of vids of my openers and 2nd lifts in bench and deadlift at this years BDFPA;

135KG bench press

142.5kg bench press

250kg deadlift
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdoKky659hk

260kg deadlift
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyZ4ck47ST4

Anyway you can now see my sartorial elegance on the platform!!

15/4/08

Power clean and push press (repsxsets)- 60x1x3, 70x1x2, 80x1x2, 90x1
Barbell rows- 60x10, 70x10, 80x10
Hammer curls- 25lbx10, 35lbx10

Just a little session today, and unlike any real session I'd normally do. I just wanted to clear the cobbwebs from a weeks hols to Egypt that I got back from on monday. Tomorrow will be the start of my real training cycle for Euro's with some deadlift training.

142.5kg!! Cheers. I took 150 on my 3rd attempt but despite a decent effort didn't have it in me. In hindsight should have done 147.5 but there you go. I am not the best bencher and miss lifts when things are slightly off!

I thought it was a bit odd you were doing an MSc but teaching, oh well!.

Yeah i'm comparing Eccentric & Concentric loading techniques using EMG on pec/delt/tri at different loads.

Should be a good bit of research and with any luck get it published. Everything else is going fairly well, got 3x coursework and a practical exam in 4 weeks time so its time management to the extreme at the moment.

Whats your PhD on then?

I am believing so. I think it needs a bit of publisicing/galvansing on sugden. Ed still seems very keen and I think it was his idea. Hopefully Ola still is, as he is pretty much going to be hosting it.

phil said he will come, i personally think making it a clean and press meet with a lift of your choice would be better cus i for 1 dont want to pull a big deadlift 4-5 weeks away from the euro's

iain, wil you be going to the euro's ?

Yes mate thats the plan. Not sure what happens with invites etc. I will have to get the ball rolling end of this week. I don't mind taking a heavy deadlift then. I plant to have 2 week cycles prior to the Euros. From the sounds of things at Sugden a few guys are pulling out and a different venue is now being suggested.

Cheers Big K!

16/4/08

Deadlift- 180x3, 205x8 (pb, probably), 165x3x3
Belted band deadlifts (light band)- 165x2, 185x2x2

Solid little session and 1st session back at it. It's the start of a 4 week cycle where I'll work up to a solid top set then do some back of work and an asistance lift or 2 (Ed Coan Program-like). 205 was tough but not that bad. I quite frankly couldn't be arsed working any harder to get a 10 rep pb . Still I was annoyed that my camera ran out of memory before I pulled the 1st rep! Dam holiday snaps clogging up the place.

Band work on the deadlifts was okay, but not that promising. Last time I did them they felt good, but not sure I will do much of them at the moment. Wish I had a jump stretch platform. Think I'll rotate in pin pulls from various heights as my assiatance lift plus some shrugs.

I have sum vids of the lighter sets on my phone which I may download even though they are not particulay interesting.

205x8 (pb, probably

lmao, that's the way high reps should be - "well, I think that was a pr, it's been so long I have no idea"

How do you set up your bands Iaink? Drapped over the bar and standing on it? I would kill for a platform haha

Cross trainer- 20min @ 60RPM approx 25% of max resistance
Various stretching mobility and traction

Whilst crosstraining I took my pulse a few times and it was solidly around 135b/min. I then worked out that I was working at approx 70% max heart rate. All this means is that CV is very boring!!!!

Forgot my mp3 player today, so I had to think of ways to shut out the radio one being played!

Considering the intensity of effort my HR was too high. Or at least too high compared to my running/general fitness days.

Drapped over my belt. It works pretty well for those thatdon't have nay means of attaching bands to the floor.

I actually should use my older belt. I doubt it will do much damage, but when you've just got a new belt (you wiated 3 months to arrive!) it kinda seems harsh to beat it up!

18/4/08

Bench press- 100x3, 110x3, 120x5, 120x3x2
PC + PP- 60x3, 70x3, 80x1, 90x1, 95x1, 100x0
Bench press + doubled mini bands- 60x3, 70x3, 80x3, 90x3, 80x3, 70x3, 60x3
Dumbbell row- 42.5x5, 52.5x5, 62.5x5, 72.5x5x3

This session went; ****-fun-solid. Was waayyy of on the benching, no power and couldn't lock in my technique. A planned 'easy' 5x5 became a tough 5,3,3! No biggy this close after comps and hols, but it's never fun to have 'nil point' in the tank. PCPP were better. Was planing on doing some light tripples but they felt good so I pushed them. Very happy with 95 and missed 100 by a nats dick. Locked out the right arm then lost it backwards on the left side. Pulled it down to my chest and dropped it from there. Only problem was my shins got in the way! My left shin took the brunt and is swollen somewhat as I speak and the right has had all its deadlift scabs wipped off I have the strength for 100 or more it's just timing and stability at the top. Rows were solid and that was that. I'll need to box clever tomorrow on the squats before I decied what reps to do.

A couple of vids when Emma's laptap decides to load it onto youtube!
