Injuries/joint problems - 27 April 2009 14:51 ( #1 )

Well thought it would be interesting to know how many here on the over 40's forum either have long standing injuries or joint problems, I do and have found that they have appeared almost over night lol in the last 2-3 years.

None yet for me, touch wood, I imagined with all my stopping and starting that I would, probably because of my diet, lots of olive oil etc, or maybe I dont push myself enough.................?

I do Dav but surprisingly they are not related to lifting.
Lost my Anterior Cruciate Ligament when I was about 17-18 so there was no twisting and turning for the next 22 years, got the reconstruction procedure done when I was 40 about 3 years ago, it`s miles better but squatting and deads are a big problem, the joint seizes up the next day and I can`t walk if I go too hard.
 
Also have permanent damage to ligaments, tendons and bones in left wrist and hand, I have to use a brace or a hook to lift to take some of the pressure off the joint otherwise it`s a no-go.
 
Other than that I think I`ve been very fortunate.

Yes loads of knee probs mainly from my footballing days though!!Just back form specialist got to have an op on my right knee cartilage damaged!!

Well it seems par for the course once you hit a certain age I guess to pick things up. Mine have all been training related. I had no problems what so ever just over 3 years ago 37-38 then a lot of stress in life, little sleep due to arrival of 2 children and not reducing training accordingly and bang bad knees, bad elbow, buggered up shoulder lol.
Going to try cissus qaudrangularis as I 've read some great things about it, to see if it helps.

I have a lower back problem which rears it's head when I least want it to but that was caused by a work related lifting accident.
I also get a tendonitis occasionally in the elbows.

Sciatica as been the bain of my last 20+ years, this latest bout however as really laid me low, in to my 5th week off work, waiting for my xray results.

ive had a rotary cuff injury in my right shoulder for around 2 years now(im assuming its rotary anyway)bloody painfull if i lift too heavy.
i also  have a fused disc in my spine,only comes on every 3/4 years but when it does that too is bloody painfull. falling apart i am lmao.
out of the darkness and into the light,thats why im still here and willing to fight!

knee problems since I was 19 (ran a marathon whilst nursing knee injury related to over training)

Herniated Disc problem lower back (at L4/L5) for 20 years. Last time it went took me 18 months to get back to the same strength. also left me needing walking sticks to get around in the first week following the injury. This was caused by years of misdiagnosis by my GP who always stated was a non specific back injury and I should exercise to strengthen the area when all the excercises I did only aggravated the injury.

C7 nerve root in neck referring pain to shoulder, bicep and tricep (left Side) - Think this one has gone for the moment but I need to pay constant attention to my posture to stop it coming back

Latest one is left shoulder problem unrelated to the nerve root issue, had an Xray in the week and just waiting to see if that has flagged anything up.

I'm only just 40 as well, I've learned to train around most of the injuries without much of a problem,  I'm not a body builder which helps, just a recreational trainer trying to keep a maintainable amount of muscle mass.

I get severe pain in the inner elbow joints, especially when
working biceps. Have real difficultym the day after training in gripping, or carrying even the lightest item. My diet is pretty good, lot of oily fish, salads etc. However, i only weigh in at 67 klios, and do lift/train with the heavyiest weights i can manage.
 Perhaps i should increase the reps and decrease the weight.
 Aged 56 btw.

Both rotator cuffs have torn ligaments (confirmed by an ortho by MRI). Somehow I can work around that with no pain.
Right pec (lower half) has a torn tendon. Upper half is still attached.
Just 4 weeks ago, I tore the proximal tendon of the long head of my bicep. I'm 51 and the ortho refused to do surgery because of my age. He claims that there is very little strength loss. I guess I will find out after I rehab it.

I highly recommend that. Save the heavy weights for compound exercises and large muscle groups. You could be looking at ruptured tendons if you aren't careful.

Well it seems that it gets to most of us in the end. Just for the record and if anyone is interested I have tried many different approaches with regards to trying to improve my joint health, I have found that some foods make it worse so steer clear of them and have tried most of the common supplements - with no success. But I am into the 2nd week of taking cissus quadrangularis and it seems to have kicked in today - if it carries on then this stuff for me is bloody marvellous, its not placebo or me just having a good day its a major difference will see how the next few weeks pan out.

That,s one of the problems with getting older Dragonrider, I know the solution to the problem, but as my biceps are and always have been my best assets, i,m finding it hard
to face facts and drop the weights.  However, the pain incurred is rapidly overcoming my vanity.

I have arthiritic knees, too many motorcycle accidents, but it was worth it lol

Makes leg tradining hard at times but at 43 what do you expect? At least another 20 yrs training  :)

The pain is probably golfer's elbow caused not by golf but by gripping thin objects like golf clubs or barbells. You can have corticosteroid injections to treat this. I had four (the maximum number recommended is three). Each time the problem returned when i startd training again. I eventually controlled this by always using neoprene elbow wraps when training, using thick bars or wrapping them to make them thicker, and asprin based lotion (Radian B) before and after training. I never found ibuprofen based cream to be effective.

Forgot about this, the sciatica came about as a result of arthritis in my spine which showed up on my blood tests and x rays.
