James' Three Minute Calves
27 November 2011 18:47
( permalink)
Who has tried James' 3 minute calf routine? I'm currently doing a full body routine but tagged this 3 minute calf workout on once a week as my only isolation exercise to see if I would gain from it. After about 4 weeks I can say that there's certainly some calf growth and a marked strength increase. The DOMS are incredible, so if you have felt your ears burning in the mornings James, that would be me...errr...singing your praises For those who are looking for a good calf blaster, you could do a lot worse than giving this one a shot.

Yeah 've done it and it's brilliant. I actually thought that after years of playing rugby and climbing / mountaineering that my calves were bomb proof, but this routine really hit the spot. I've not noticed any extra growth although my calves were very well developed anyway but I certainly felt the burn!!

I'd use this routine for a couple of months, then change the style and come back to it in a few months

Tried the 3 minutes calfs 2 days before a long haul flight, bad mistake. The morning after I first tried these I had doms like I've never had before or since, walking on my toes couldn't put feet flat, in the morning I had to crawl down the stairs. Think the doms lasted a good 4 days. On the plus side with doms like that you knew you where doing something right.

Can I do this with barbell raises off the floor ? I have no standing calf machine only a seated one that feels odd or a leg press...

Had a go last week on something similar (didn't quite follow the article). Except not to failure and not reducing the weight each time... My calfs were almost unbearable 48 hours later... 3x Calf Raise Circuit Barbell Raises 1x10 (150), 1x10 from bench, 3x10 from floor fast (three different foot positions. Why do we train calfs from a platform ? I mean there are very few times in real life where we stretch them under load. I'm guessing the full range is more beneficial to hypertrophy ?
