Jamie Olivers 30 minute meals

I love cooking and jamie Oliver is my favourite celebrity chef, during my generation he has done far more for healthy eating, promoting home cooking and helping get rid of unhealthy school dinners than any other celebrity chef....

but after watching his series of 30 minute meals he's really starting to annoy me with the amount of F*CKING OLIVE OIL he uses, he puts it in literally everything and then garnishes the dish with more p!ssing olive oil !!!!!!!

I was going to start a thread on this! I kid you not!

He cooked a few steaks the other day and I joked that he would probably drown them in olive oil and sure enough he did! I know its good stuff but my god the man must have shares in stuff!

you lot are f'in brilliant!! my status yesterday on fb was something along the lines of "there are no words to describe how much i hate jamie oliver" and thats for the reasons you lot have said! he must be sponsored by salt and olive oil the way he goes on using it! and the thing is i swear olive isnt even good for you once you heat it up past room temperature, something about breaking down the good fats in it or something!?

I've noticed this, he drenches everything in it!

The whole idea of most folk who don't have the chopping speed and all the cooking stuff and ingredients to hand (and prepped up by some assistant) being able to cook the stuff he does in 30 mins is totally unrealistic, and that aspect of it annoys me.

And yes, his obsession with olive oil and the amount of salt he puts on everything is wearing thin, not to mention contradicting all his spouting on about  'healthy eating'

The 30 minutes is more figurative. The point being you can make nice food in a short amount of time. Roughly as long as it takes to cook a ready meal in the over.

I've worked in a pro kitchen (Hotel) The only reason chefs cook the way they do in restaurants (and hotels) and the TV is cus its quick not cus its the best way to cook........ Cold olive oil is REALLY good for you but you shouldn't cook with it as it brakes down to a trans fat...  (I swear down Jamie is pissed on the 30 min prog, and he makes me laugh big time with his attitude which is fun to watch!!)

fat adds taste to food, simple as that

I use a lot of olive oil in my cooking, but not to the extent he does.  He must go through a couple of litres a week!

Yeah you are right as well as salt (got nothing against natural fat). But I have made a curry that is as nice as a curry from a take away but only has 1 tea spoon of oil and no sugar.. Cus I'm not in a hurry................

Im a chef, I have never seen a chef use so much oil either, but I think thats all part of his image too

as said, fats add to flavour...so thats why we always fry/roast fish instead of say steaming/poaching, the flavour is much better.. it also true that oilve oil isnt recommended for cooking too as mentioned.

I use plenty of oil when cooking fish/meats for a couple of reasons but its mainly to crisp up nicely and get the colour/flavour right

I watched Jamie Oliver yesterday - he dressed the beetroot with olive oil, dressed the cottage cheese with olive oil, then put them together and dressed the whole lot with more olive oil!!! I gave up when he started banging on about how making your own butter "gives you ownership" of it or some such crap.

He uses far too much olive oil for sure. However, apart from butter and coconut oil which are mainly saturated fats, olive oil and avocado oils being mono-unsaturated fats are probably the best fats to cook with.

Mono fats are not as stable as saturated fat under high temperature, but they are far more stable than the so called 'heart healthy polyunsaturated fats' like flora etc. The way brands such as flora are allowed to promote themselves as super healthy is scandalous IMO.

That was another debate we were having. He obviously knows what hes doing whereas others will have to read the instructions etc!

I reckon it would take me a couple of hours to prepare what he does and I'm fairly handy in the kitchen!
