Job Advice 02 February 2012 14:51 (permalink)
Currently work in IT. Contracting (not a contractor through choice) and based at the same site the past 6 years. My contract gets renewed every 3 months
A job has come up on site for a different type of IT role than what im doing. Initially based for 12 months then the site see if the person taking the role is up to it and if the role is needed. Chance it might be permanent after that.
I know the site well. I know the staff and get on well with them.

Its the initial 12 month thing which is causing me concern. I know im currently on 3 months contracts but i love the job im doing. Its more hands on (fixing servers, laptops/desktops etc). The new role is looking after the plants shop floor application.

What would you do? Would the 12 month thing be dodgy? I believe as long as the site stays open there is other a need for my current job.
SUCCESS IS MY EFFORT.

Depends what the payout is like mate
Average daily SysAdm should be £350.00/day (certainly I wouln't entertain less than that on a non-perm basis)
That's about £85K a year anyway you look at it, and its contracted for the 12 months, nice little earner in these times really!!
Im not contracting at the moment though, the market just seems that little bit too risky but I'll be dying to get back out there on the contract roles soon

You need to re-negotiate mate!!! LOL, all of the agency System Admin Staff, I've had to employ through agencies have taken home +£300/day. Not sure if thats just coz its London though!

I've had to employ some really sh1t system admins here in London and pay them £325/day because my old boss was too pigheaded to "add to the headcount" as he put it...

Why is it renewed every 3 months and not for longer period?
What is the difference in salary from what you get now to the perm role?
Is there any reason why your role is through an agency rather than done by a permanent employee?
After 12 months in the other role, is there a danger that you may not be kept on?

In a word I'd say yes, London mindset on wages is very slanted in what you should be earning.  Can't really compare London prices to anywhere else in the country to be honest.  It has its very own employment bubble in truth.

Pauld - What you are doing currently is illegal in employment law terms, if you work at the same Company doing the same role as a temp or contractor for any amount of time you automatically have a right to permanent employee status. Your agency should/will know this, and probably are ignoring it as they would loose there 20% off the top. There are lots of ways to dodge this but as I said previously, demonstrably the same role over a certain amount of time at the same location and there is nothing they can do but take you on as an employee, and with all the same benefits the general workforce get such as sick pay, medial benefits, paid leave etc, worth checking out your own situation
