Just achieved a new PB on bench at 46

Hi folks, very pleased after benching 160kg last night, for a new PB. I know strength should at some point start tailing off as you get older, but mine is still going strong and I'm getting bigger and stronger, drug free and unequipped. onward and upward.

Congratulations on a new PB. I won't say age means nothing but it means a lot less if you stay in shape and retain a positive attitude. I'm still blasting away at 48. My current PB on bench is 152.5kg and I'm due to have a pop at 160 in the next couple of weeks. I'm also due to become a dad again (after a twelve year break) at the end of the month so there's something else that's still working.

congrats on the arrival coming soon! I only had my first at 44, and we are planning another at some point. Best of luck with the 160kg. I used Lee Haywards bench program, and mine went up 10kgs in 4 weeks. I'm so pleased with it I'm going to follow it again for the next few weeks...Age is a number (to a point! :o) )

Thanks for that. I'll look up that programme and see how it fits. I've been doing a basic three times per week programme which has really helped even after thirty+ years of training - Bench press Clean and press / push press Rows or pull downs (twice per week) Deadlifts 1 per week Squats Pushdowns or dips Hammer curls Seems to be paying dividends. The clean and press has made the biggest difference with arms gaining by 3/4" in a few weeks and shoulders thickening out. No diet change, no supplements.

I quite like the idea of clean and press, seems like a real power move. My arms grow too easily so maybe I'd have to watch that one! Shoulders could do with the bulk though.. The Lee routine is not free, but its well worth it, the 160 was very comfortable so could well be more in the tank. You should go with what works I guess, I got stuck on the 6 x 3 Scott M routine and got stale and no progress and it was only once a week. This routine is about maintaining everything else but hitting bench 3 times a week, although not a chest knackering 3 times, so you don't overtrain. For example 1 day might be working up to heavy 10,8,6,4,2 reps , then the next 15 fast reps for 5 sets (that one hurts the most!). Good luck...

Nice one. I was pleased with my 130 pb on my 45th birthday but your 160 makes me look positively weedy. The Hayward program sounds interesting, I'll get a look at it.

Can't say I'm stronger than in my late 20's but I'm leaner (92kg) and a lot fitter aerobically than I was then. I'm also much more relaxed and really enjoy my training these days. I had taken a break for a couple of years to get into mountaineering and hillwalking but I wasn't happy being 12 stone and doing high rep training. So here I am, back where I belong, slowly but surely destroying my skeleton and denying the passage of time!

Nice to see some of us `oldies` still going strong. Been out of training for around 18 months now after damaging a muscle in my arm while working. Had tried a few times before to get back into it but the muscle gave up fairly quick each time, not touched any weights now for 12 months so hopefully am 100% now. Was up to a PB of 125kgs on the bench (bodyweight of 80kgs) and at 45 am now wondering how long it`s going to take me to get back there?

Its always quicker to get it back than it was to get it in the first place, eat well and you'll be there in no time. make sure you get adequate rest and believe you will get stronger. Its mental too.. para1966 Nice to see some of us `oldies` still going strong. Been out of training for around 18 months now after damaging a muscle in my arm while working.
