Kids with no lights on their bikes.. 29 January 2012 16:29 (permalink)
I see this all the time where I live, it doesn't seem to be an issue at all anymore..

Didn't see this lad until the very last second the other evening...dressed in black etc, there used to be ads on the TV about having no lights and being seen to drivers...now they'd just laugh I suppose?

Its not just kids, loads of adults riding around in the dark expecting you to see them...some people think just wearing a hi viz jacket replaces lights too.

I got a couple of dozen sets from the pound shop and I give them out to the kids near me when I see them (and a few adults), better than killing one of the little sods. I generally get a "fcuk off you wanker" when I stop and offer a set but if one kids live gets saved them it'll be worth the small coast and the abuse.

Mind I bet they don't last long before they are nicked or smashed.

Where I live its a criminal offence not to have lights on your bike (and not to carry or wear reflectors if you're a pedestrian on an unlit street. The cops stop and fine you for it).

Legally, if you dont have reflectors or bike lights and you're killed or injured by a car driver there's no legal come-back (unless they were also clearly breaking the law - drunk, for instance).

I think if you're not a driver its probably hard to appreciate just how difficult it is to see a person in black coat and trousers on an unlit bike on a dark night - they're practically invisible until you're right on top of them

The problem is, there are so few coppers about now and the kids know it...seen 15yr olds without helmets on Motocross bikes on the roads a good few times, again they know the chances of getting caught are slim and they're simply not bothered even if they are probably.

True, I think they are all down country lanes looking for dogs that aren't on leads

              ^^^lol

it does p*ss me off though - Id feel like sh*t if I ran someone over and injured or even killed them... even if it 100% wasnt my fault.

How hard is it to pick up a cheap led bicycle light from the pound shop for the sake of giving car drivers a bit of warning that you're actually there?

                ahh this one gets me.

When im on a night shift coming home in a morning i see a couple of paper lads as im on my journey home.
Both always dress dark and ride BMX type bikes with no lights, young lads probably early teens, but what annoys me the most is that their parents who obviously know their kids are out in the dark delivering papers let them use their bikes with no lights...

Also the news agent should take some responsibility if these lads are out working for him IMO.
Kids are daft and dont think but the parents should do some thinking also.

I cycle a fair bit myself and I'm lit up like a christmas tree when it's vaguely dark, didn't stop me getting run over by an off duty bus driver whilst I was on a cycle lane a couple of years back.
She then accused me of being a cnut, speeding and breaking her door mirror (which actually had no glass in it before the "accident"), she was hysterically screaming abuse at me whilst I'm laid on the road bleeding from several places and too dazed to get up.
Turned out she was bricking it in case I called the cops as she would very likely lose her job.

i think cyclists have some balls, dangerous past time on the roads that...
My mate cycles about 15 miles each way to work everyday. ( everyday, nothing stops the bloke !)
If he's ever late i always think someones knocked him off his bike.

dont feel bad when you run them down and kill them its natural selection, if you run them over and they dont die just reverse over them (otherwise they will be claiming benefits for the rest of their life)

Some have cheap ass led falshing things which are barly visable.

However my biggest hate are joggers who wear pure black, nearly hit one as I was reversing into the driveway.

i see kids on quad bikes with no helmet on and carrying passengers, riding around as fast as they can and not expecting that theyre gonna come off it and end up as stroppy wee sh1ts in the kids hospital, which is what inevitably happens as have dealt with it before in my job.

slightly off topic but sorta on the same vein was the surgeon i work with i saw riding his mountain bike through central belfast traffic with no helmet on while talking on his phone and waving at me. he got a wtf talk the next time i saw him.

I ride a motorbike 23 miles each way into london each day mainly in the dark (totally this time of year)  and on a regular (every day x about 5 +) basis I see cyclists with no lights and no refelective gear, loads go throgh red lights, several riding the wrong way down bus lanes, sometimes on mobiles as well...
I am no angel, but do these guys have a death wish ?...Pedestrians as well one guy in a suit in the middle of a junction on holloway road this morning...what a tit

I was driving out the pub the other month, turning right. Pitch black evening, poor street lighting. Checked right - clear, checked left - clear, checked right - clear. Start to pull out, jump on brakes causing Jess to scream out. The reason - 3 lads on fecking scooters (the type below) going full pelt down the middle of the road in dark clothes!! They must have been doing about 30mph, and were effectively invisible.... ****wits, would probably have done the world good for me not to brake.

TBF its about half and half where I live lots do have lights but equally I've seen many that don't. Also agree that whether you are in the right or wrong if you hit someone its still not nice etc...

Is it just carelessness or just not "cool" as as has been said they are very cheap to purchase. Whilst we're on the topic of cyclists anther thing that bugs me is when you get 2 riding along a busy road or narrow country lane talking with not a care in the world to whats going on around them riding side by side taking up the complete lane grrrr........
