Know about steel & metals? Look in! 13 November 2009 18:02 (permalink)
I recently posted about a whole bunch of steel and cast iron that i picked up from an old fabrication workshop that was closing down;

My dad has noticed several times how EN40B was written on the side of the wrapping around two pieces so decided to checkup on that earlier today.

Turns out that each piece that is 27mm x 280mm and weigh around 15kg each are a fairly special kind of steel so he made a few enquiries.

One piece of this stuff would be £90 plus £25 delivery plus £VAT - so arguably these two pieces together are worth over two hundred quid!

I realise that they aren't going to be worth the full value but i'm thinking about sticking them on eBay as well as seeing if the suppliers themselves would be interested in a bit.

Crazy that something like that is worth quite so much

I naturally knew this and DIDNT copy and paste it lol

[id="indiv"]EN40B is a chromium-molybdenum nitriding steel usually supplied in the hardened and tempered condition, which offers high wear resistance together with good toughness and ductility. It is characterised by its suitability for nitriding, which can give a hard wear resistant core in the range of  61-65Rc. The relatively low temperature of the nitriding process produces components with a scale free surface, and minimum distortion.

That's pretty much what i'd read - my dad was already familiar with grading steels as he has an engineering and fabrication background.

The details and infact the quote we got came from here West Yorkshire Steel

You can see the still wrapped lumps in the photo above. To think that it would cost me £60 for two 20kg plates - i'd happily do a swap haha

With enought thickness any metal is bulletproof.  Titanium is just very, very light and good corrosion resistance.

I also use titanium. Its the only time i ever dread getting an order for a certain job... The outlay is horrendous!

Yeah.  I used it for piping on a job that was bugeted with 316 stainless.  60 tonnes of it lol.  The company I worked for turned over 3 billion and even they wet themselves when the bill came in.

Not quite lol.  Sch80, 32bar rated 8 & 12" pipe mostly.  Welding was an utter ball ache, so few who could do it.

                                      Haha, completely different then....
Titanium welding is a nightmare, i had the option to price for the welding on the job i do. It got shipped elsewhere as i didnt even want to put a price in.

Sorry for the complete hi jack.... Nice plates Chris. lol

i wouldn't have gone and bought it with no intention of using it even if i had your money Blue.

I got the lot for free - and at the very least i have already been able to use two big cast iron plates which added 47kg to my bar straight off and i haven't finished boring any holes yet

First thing i was able to do was actually get a 175kg deadlift which is a PB for me so since it cost me nothing more than a favour i am happy with that.

On top of that i might be able to offload this valuable steel, and still have another 150-200kg of plates leftover!

Very unlikely i'll get any sensible value for that steel even if i do manage to sell it - but you never know.
