I heard a rumour that originally the squat bar that Loz completely destroyed everyone with was loaded with 370kg but Loz was the only contender to complete a rep.  They then made it lighter as that wouldn't have made good TV.  I was well impressed with his performance in that event and his performance overall.  Comes across as a really nice bloke but I can't help thinking he looks like the guy from the money supermarket ads

Is this the second time you had trouble with the grips on the farmers walk? though this year it seemed half the field had trouble.
are they a lot of harshers grips than a normal barbell?

As per comments elsewhere and on the program the handles were much thinner than usual. Hence the torn skin of more than a few competitor. It seemed like a piss poor design by people who ought to know better.

Not quite. There were lots of no reps in his heat (first to do the squat). They then change the height they had to squat down too. IIRC several lifters chose not to go again at this new height. I think Loz got 4 on the intital height. Terry and Ken will know the score for sure.

Loz looked a class above on that squat. He made his 7 reps look a LOT easier than Big Z's 7.

I was surprised re the squat and it obviously shows the relative lack of static leg strength that many of these guys have, I guess as the events aren't centred around this so much their training doesn't warrant it.

30 years ago you'd have had a number of raw 400kg plus squatters in the field who would have probably comfortably done this but I guess things change.

TBH several lifters still comfortably did the squat lift at WSM. bY That I mean they did some reps with it. Just as many guys in the early era of SM would have stuggled. Off course suits now are better. I suspect a modern squat suit even with straps down approaches an early suit and wraps?

I think SM still have plenty of static leg strength as demonstrated by the current crop of great SM deadlifts. However you could be right in the lack of focus on the back squat? Have to ask guys in the sport. I always read of SM back squating on logs and vids etc?

I know Iain it was just a personal observation and if you look at raw or "near raw" squatting the above 4 still rank as some of the greatest squatters of all time, some 30 or so years on, it just surprised me that some/many very strong men found it so hard. The most impressive wasn't Laurences for me but the Norwegian guy who got 5 I think as his squats were lower.

I agree. Top squat strength hasn't really changed. Equipped squat strength has. Not helped by the strongest squatters (PL anyway) mainly lifting equipped including multi-ply.

I am sure it was heavier then changed. As for guys lacking leg strength... c'mon. It was more the sheer size of the equipment, thick bar and lack of rotation etc than no leg strength.  At the 2010 Mighty Mitt we used a similar set up entitled 'the Sorinex bell' IIRC.+

I wasn't saying for one minute these guys aren't extremely strong Mobster just that leg strength was lacking with many when you look at who failed at what 320kg, and raw squatting has not moved forward in what 30 or so years the above names are still considered some of the strongest ever raw squatters (to depth).

It was just an observation that's all.

it was nothing to do with the lack of leg strength! Plenty of 400+ squatters at WSM. The thick bar made a huge difference, the size of the ends and non rotating make a difference too and the fact they had to touch at the bottom threw a lot of guys off.

It wasn't made lighter it was always the same weight but the stands they had to touch were 4 inches lower so they raised them up
