Making smoothies - expensive?
23 January 2012 17:53
( permalink)
I bought a blender for some home-made, protein filled smoothies to take into work. But the cost per smoothie seems so high, or is it just me? It almost feels cheaper to buy one ready-made... How can I lower the amount I spend on making these smoothies? Any tips?

You can buy smoothie packs, basically bags of mixed frozen fruits. Could use them with a scoop of whey or something. To be honest it probably wont be much cheaper.

Do you live near a lidl or Aldi, they usually do cheap fruit. Buy in season and stock up on special offers on at the time. Use water instead of orange juice.

yeh they are not going to be dirt cheap to make and if innocent is on offer then the price is pretty similar ive found per serving if using a lot of fruit, but you are comparing fresh made with packaged - trpociana is cheaper than freshly squeezed oranges also, but IMO you cant compare.

3 pks of froozen fruit for a fiver in tesco. For example their blueberries are 300g. Getting 3 pks of these is much cheaper than buying fresh and they wont go bad

get down your local market just as they're closing up you'll get bags of fruit for very little - yeh they might be a little battered but you're gonna blend them anyway - or cut the bruises off?

The choice of fruit you use affects the cost, if you use berries then frozen is cheaper than fresh and there's less waste. Currently Bananas are a cheap buy at 68p/kg (though they have been as low as 52p/kg lately).
