Maths Homework Help 14 March 2010 19:12 (permalink)
My 10 year old daughter has some maths homework that we cant get the answer to. Seen recently theres some maths experts on here so can any of you help please. Here is the question.

36 people live in 8 houses in Albert Square. Each house has a different number of people living in it, Each line of three houses has 15 people living in it. How many people live in each house.

    H   H   H
    H        H
    H   H   H

H = a house as cant draw on here.

Thanks for any help

Mick

Each line must add up to 15, and every house must be different, and the total must add up to 36

            SO one line could be

            3people 8people 4 people

You just need to get her to experiement with totals.

What i think might help is knowing that if there are 15 in each row, logically that leaves 6 people in the last two houses (36 minus the 2x15) so those ones could only be 1 person and 5 people, or 2 and 4, but possibly 6 and 0 since the question doesn't appear to stipulate that no houses have nobody living in them. (DOH! put 1 instead of 0 - Binary error! )

I'll finish now and check what i think the answer might be rather than posting it

I remember playing a fruit machine about 30 years ago that paid out if you got those numbers in line.  159 was in the middle and then you had 672 and 834.  Remember it as if it were yesterday.  Talking about this subject my 7 year old daughter is really struggling with her times table big time.  But I vowed I would never put pressure on my kids to do well at school.  Dont see the point with all these degree people struggling to find work.

Of course, education is only useful for finding jobs and people without degrees never struggle to find work.

This question is actually bloody difficult since you can't find an analytic solution. You can get certain constraints on the system, but then you just have to plug numbers in until you get the right answer.

                    8-1-6
                    4-0-2
                    3-5-7

                    solves it

Cool. That's a very one dimensional view of education you have there. There's more to it than just getting a job.

Its a long long time that I was at school so I am not sure what a 7 year old should know.  My girl is struggling with her times table.  Shouldnt they know all by this age.

Don't worry, most kids don't know their times tables at 7 years old. Mind you, these days most kids don't know their times tables at 17 either (even the A-level maths students!)

I'm 31 and when i was at Junior School times tables got taught but we also did things at home. Education isn't solely within the walls of the school building.

What I did today before she went to her mothers was a poster of her 3 times table with the answers spelt out.  I asked her to colour it in for me and bring it back next time.  Trouble was though I titled it Hannahs 3 times table and accidently typed out the 2 times table. lol.

Quite possibly the worst book ever written.
