Members' Interview with DaveyBoyUk 17 September 2009 11:54 (permalink)
This week DaveyBoyUk has been selected to be interviewed.

The usual things apply: please use this topic to ask him any questions about  lifestyle, training, diet and progress, or anything else.  Please, nothing too personal or invasive. Please bear with him and give him time to reply.

Dave, thanks for agreeing to take part in this interview. A few questions from me to start with:

1) Can you give us a brief run down of how you got into working out and how long you've been training?

2) What are your current pbs?

3) What is your occupation?

4) How long will you be staying in Canada and what do you miss most?
Thanks!!

          Hi Guys,

          1) Can you give us a brief run down of how you got into working out and how long you've been training?

I am 25, have been training serious for around 5 years. I originally joined a gym to loose weight, and the bug bit. I have just finished the U90kg strongman circuit and I am powerlifting at the moment, possibly looking to move to Oly lifting.

          2) What are your current pbs?
          My current PBs (raw) are:

          Squat - 210kg
Deadlift - 230kg (Recovering from back injury a year ago, so it is a little low compared to my squat)
          Overhead Press - 115kg
          Bench - Around 150kg, haven't done 1rm for a while
Clean and Jerk - Will let you know later tonight ;-)

          3) What is your occupation?
I work in finance, specifically quantatitive and algorithmic trading.
          4) How long will you be staying in Canada and what do you miss most?

Good question, until I get bored! I think 1 to 2 years, with maybe a brief contract in NYC on the way back. I miss my friends and family, my strongman training group in Reading. Miss London alot too, especially the history and culture which you do not get in North American cities so much.

I was headhead hunted by Canada's national pension fund. They arranged everything for me including Visa, accomodation, etc. As far as I know you can apply for a work visa in 2 ways, one is with a Labour Market Opinion, where they assess if you have skills that will benefit Canada. The second way is fast track scheme, where you apply based on a defined set of skill shortages in the country.

Hello mate, I'm also an Englishman exiled in Canada.

I have a few questions for you.

In your opinion what is the best lift for packing on size and strength?

As a strongman do you tend to worry about diet and such or is it more a case of whacking down as much food as possible? (I have a few strongman friends and this answer always varies)

Do you use supplements and if so which ones?

              Thanks buddy

Hello mate, I'm also an Englishman exiled in Canada.
Hey mate, I see you are in Alberta, I am in Toronto atm, what was your reason for the trip across the pond?
I have a few questions for you.

In your opinion what is the best lift for packing on size and strength?

For me squat is king for strength and size. I only do compound exercises, so my training consists of squat, deadlift, bench, overhead work, rows, cleans, snatch. I haven't done any isolation in over 2 years no I think.

As a strongman do you tend to worry about diet and such or is it more a case of whacking down as much food as possible? (I have a few strongman friends and this answer always varies)
I try and get as much food in me as I can. I try and keep it clean, but I struggle to get in the calories sometimes. I can tell me performance decreases if I have had sufficient calorie intake. I competed u90kg and had serious problems making it down to u90kg, as a result I crash dieted/dehydrated, which probably cost me a few places in the comps.
Do you use supplements and if so which ones?

I used protein/carb (either glucose or WMS)/creatine shake post-workout, usually 40g protein, 100g of carbs, 3g creatine. I have a stash of MRP's in my draw at work incase I have a busy day and I need to get some calories fast. Ocassionally use ZMA to aid my sleep as I find that works for me (well it gives me strange dreams which are fun!) and use a joint complex to help recovering from heavy lifting.

Yes I'm in Alberta, came here with my Wife; she is British but is a permenant resident so we came over via Spousal sponsership. I enjoy it on the whole but like yourself do get a tad homesick at times.

I had a hell of a time getting ZMA over here...been told it's illegal by many supplement stores had to get in from the U.S....love the crazy dreams too and find it really helps with my sleep.

Thanks for answering my questions mate!

I picked it up in the shopping mall here in Toronto straight off the shelf. Strange, would be interesting to know why.

Tough question! Maybe getting my physics degree or having entered a fairly lucrative career so early in my life.

Just one question from me (well one and a half, sort of): What made you go down the Strongman route in the first place? Did you ever consider bodybuilding?

I started bodybuilding, then moved to powerlifting and then strongman. I find strength/strongman training more enjoyable than bodybuilding. My training partner said to me last night, you would be a good bodybuilder but you are too lazy to do the cardio and dieting. He is right!

Hi mate, I see your from Peterborough, I am originally from just outside there.

My job entails analysing financial data for markers/identifiers, which can than be used to trade on and make money, in a nutshell. It involves fair bit of mathematics and even more time ploughing through massive amounts of financial data. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do when I left uni so I went for the highest paying industry! Worked out well as I have abit of a passion for my job.

What exactly does your job entail and how did you get into it?

Hi mate, I see your from Peterborough, I am originally from just outside there.

My job entails analysing financial data for markers/identifiers, which can than be used to trade on and make money, in a nutshell. It involves fair bit of mathematics and even more time ploughing through massive amounts of financial data. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do when I left uni so I went for the highest paying industry! Worked out well as I have abit of a passion for my job.

Ah cool, sounds interesting! I want to get into banking/finance when I leave uni for the same reason haha! I'm actually from Liverpool, I just did a year placement in Peterborough.
                                    Thanks for the respsonse!

Hey m8, just a couple of q's! Im assuming that is you in your avi btw.

                                      1. Im thinking of switching to training using a strongman approach instead of the BB technique. What is your typical set of exercises (Other than the big 4 i.e Bench,Deads.....) for Push, Pull, Legs, Shoulders kinda look like?

                                      2. You mentioned you have not done any iso movements in your workouts for about 2 years, would you say this has effected your physique much?

Sorry my questions are a bit lengthy. So thanks in advance! Good lifting and you look to have a solid build there bud.

That is me in the avi, with strange grimace trying to pick up 150kg farmers!

                                        1. Im thinking of switching to training using a strongman approach instead of the BB technique. What is your typical set of exercises (Other than the big 4 i.e Bench,Deads.....) for Push, Pull, Legs, Shoulders kinda look like?
                                        I don't follow a push/pull/legs routine, I use a modified Bill Starr Advanced 5x5 which looks like:-

                                        Mon - Squat 5x5, Bench 1x5, One-Arm Rows 3x8
                                        Wed - Deadlift 5x5, Platform Deadlift 1x5, Push/Military Press 5x5,Weighted Pullups 3x8
                                        Fri - Squat 1x5,Bench 5x5,BB Rows 5x5, Tricep Lockouts

I feel this is most effective for. I rarely change this schema, but interchange reps/exercise variation. Also allocate 1 day per week for event training or oly lifts.
                                        2. You mentioned you have not done any iso movements in your workouts for about 2 years, would you say this has effected your physique much?
My physique has improve alot since just using compound lifts. I feel I have a thicker, more balance physique and body parts that I could never get to grow through iso movements like traps/biceps/calves seemed to responsed better to heavy compound and strongman training.
Sorry my questions are a bit lengthy. So thanks in advance! Good lifting and you look to have a solid build there bud.
