I am enjoying this thread. Its funny and I can relate to bits of it. I once got told very seriously by an old man in the gym that if I lifted that weight (20kg) I would damage my ovaries!

April It was 3 weeks before my show when I had a social invitation I couldn’t turn down. My friend Lisa was having a night out to celebrate her birthday. I knew I owed it to my girl friends to spend some time with them- for months I had been declining nights out and bless them, they had accepted my hibernation from the social scene with nothing but support. I had also been given a rare day off my diet. That evening Lisa called to finalise arrangements for our night out. "I'm so excited about seeing you eat and drink again!' she shrieked. "Calm down!” I said, “I'm not going crazy..!” To be honest I was a little apprehensive. It was almost 6 months since I'd been out in town. I felt like an animal reared in darkness, faced with the prospect of daylight. I’d long ago parted ways with that mainstream world of where 'fun' consisted of getting p!ssed and letting some guy suck your face off.. I felt so distanced from it all I wasn't that convinced I would have a good time. But, it had to be done. I opened my wardrobe and rummaged through it for something to wear. To my dismay , as I tried on my old going-out clothes I realised nothing fit any more. It was all too tight around the lats, stretched across my chest. The cuts that flattered me before now made me look butch and bulky. I settled on a top that previously I would have considered far too revealing, but compared to going on stage in a thong bikini it really didn’t seem that daring at all. Even with my ‘diet brain’ adding pounds of fat onto me, I looked acceptably fit. I realised how long it had been since I'd got ready to go out. God, time had passed me by.

I parked my car up in the NPC carpark and made my way into the high street, walking past a group of lads on the way. I heard them fall silent as I passed. “Did you see her muscles?” I heard one query, in a tone that could equally have been awe or disgust. As I walked further I could feel eyes burning into me. It was little unsettling. I met up with Lisa with some relief. She gave me a huge hug. I warmed towards her and felt a twinge of guilt that I had been so distant for so long. She really was a friend i should hold onto. So totally opposite to me, but so accepting of my lifestyle, and we were happy just to be girls and gossip about men like girls do. I filled her in on the Perfect Boyfriend story (or not) a while we got money out of the cash point. “Oh honey” she said. “And he seemed so nice! “ A tramp nearby butted in. “ Get a new one lined up and then finish with the old one!” he called out drunkenly. “Remember men are bastards!” We made our way to the bar and stood for a while but before too long my feet were beginning to hurt in the unfamiliar high heels. “Just going to grab a stool” I shouted over the music. Thinking god help me, if I could just sit down, at least it would be only my ears that were suffering I went over to where a group of guys were sitting with a couple of spare stools. “Is this stool taken?” I asked "Well yeah it is but we're not gonna argue with you” one said. “Wouldnt like to get in a fight with you! lets see your muscles!' I laughed politely. One of them reached out to squeeze my bicep. “Bet you can lift some weight’ he laughed. I shook him off and glared at him as I picked up the chair and turned away.

Suddenly a bouncer was upon me. “What are you taking?” he said “I’m taking this chair” I replied, a little confused. “No,” he said, “what are you taking to look like that? You know, what stack are you on?” Oh jeez. Another idiot. “I just train hard” I said. “I've been on a competition diet for a long time. That’s why I look like this.” “Come on” he said, “I’m a professional. You cant lie to me. Tell me what stack you're on.” What a tosser I thought, like I’m going to tell a complete stranger. “I told you” I said, “I train hard. I eat a lot of protein. Maybe just a little creatine. Ok?” I winked at him and walked off with the stool, unsure whether to feel flattered or not. As the night wore on I felt increasingly uncomfortable. The room seemed full of skinny skinny boys, girls in clothes that I didnt even realise had come into fashion, people bashing into each other, girls dancing suggestively, but what had happened to their bodies? Where were all the bodybuilders? Where were all the people like me? People leaned up close to me, getting in my space. “Lisa,” I said, “I’m really tired, I have to go home.” “Oh honey, ok” she said, “Are you sure?” “Yeah” I said, “I'll call you tomorrow” I gave her a hug and headed back to my car with relief.

The tramp from earlier was by the ticket machine. “Good night?” he said. I shrugged. “It was ok” “Do you work out” he said? “No,” I smiled, “I just have good genetics.” How many times do I get asked that. How many times can I reply with a straight face? I laughed. “Yeah I do work out” I admitted. “I did too once,” said the homeless man. “I used to be 16 stone.” I looked at him and wondered how he had gone from that to the sorry state he was in now. What life throws at people. I put my ticket into the machine and was a little started by the voice coming over the tannoy “Hello can I help you?” “I didnt press the button!” I shouted into the receiver. “No,” the voice said, “We thought we'd call YOU” I looked at the machine in confusion . What the hell was going on with machines that talk? “We like your muscles. Good arms!” the voice said. This was way too surreal. I looked at the homeless man. He laughed and pointed up to a security camera over my head. I grinned and threw a double bicep shot at the camera. I heard a roar of appreciation go up from the loudspeaker. That’s where the bodybuilders are, I thought to myself. I went back to my car reassured of my place in the world….albeit a world that moved in slightly different circles to the rest of them.

May I won my first show. Dave wasn’t there but Tim was, and it was one of the most perfect days of my life. Finally, I was that girl. Cartwheeling, lean and tanned, with cuts in my quads and a smile on my face. Dave called to find out how I placed. “I won” I told him. “Well, aren’t you going to thank me?” was his reply. And so the very next day, I found a new trainer.Female. She didn’t shout at me, not once. In fact she gave me praise and encouragement. She began to boost my confidence back up again, slowly rebuilding body and mind. For those who wanted an ending….well there is no ending as such. Life has a funny way of starting with one story and breaking off on a tangent. This muscle girl embarked on a new story that so far has a happy beginning. Tim met a real girlfriend and didn’t have to pretend anymore As for the trainer, the last I heard he was dating one of his clients. As a hopeless romantic, I’d like to believe that the love of a good woman changes him and makes him a better man. But that’s not my story to tell.
