Nice squatting, and good bench too but im sure theres more in you. Im finding powercleans helping massively with leg drive on deads, help you to focus pushing the heels into the floor.

Let me know the next time your down in Brighton!

FCUKING BAD NEWS!

Was squatting weds night, worked up to 140kg, did nothing unusual in the warmups.

On the way down heard a bad tearing sound, managed to get the 140kg up though.

Struggled to walk home, was in a lot of pain and could not put any weight on the left knee.

Went to A+E, the knee is now badly swollen. He says it is most likely a cartillage tear (i'm guessing meniscus). Says to see what happens and go to my doctor if it locks.

Decided to see the GP on Friday, he says it could be a cartillage tear and some minor ligament damage.

I'm feeling a lot less pain now i'm on the diclofena, got a neoprene sleeve which is helping too.

I suspect it will be a few months before I'm squatting again, although I hope to be able to do some light good mornings, reverse hypers and ab work soon-ish.

Other than that, roll on some upper body bodybuilding work! Time to get a beach body lol!

Sh!t im sorry to hear that.

Its always very difficult to tell whether its cartilage/meniscal/ligamentous. If you wanted to push things, a lot of GPs can now request joint MRIs, to find out what it is. But rest, ice, elevation and compression will be the mainstay of treatment for now, things are likley to improve over the next few weeks.

Ian- Thanks, I want to do an unequipped BDFPA/GBPF comp late next year, with the aim of qualifying for the nationals in 2010 or at least achieving the qualifying total- hopefully exceeding it.

Fun Meter- Thanks chap, gives me an opportunity to get some upper body hypertrophy work in.

Jim- My GP did offer a MRI, but I moved to start a new job and haven't registered with a GP up here yet. Hope i'll be back deadlifting within 6 weeks and squatting heavy before Xmas, not going to rush things though.

Jim- Everlast seem to make everything, they are cheap and nasty tbh, old dear bought them.

Just putting pics up for reference, seeing as I will training very differently over the forthcoming weeks.

Initial plan is:

3x/week

Seated Chest Press; 3 sets failure 12-15
Smith OHP: 3 sets 10
Chest Support Row: 3x10 (light)
Pullover Machine: 3x10 (light)
Tri Extension: 3 sets failure
Bicep Machine: 3 sets failure

The gym i'll be using has a rope pulling cardio machine, seated, I will be using that for 10-20 mins for cardio, although it does work grip and bicep to a certain extent.

Will be doing it interval format.

Once knee is a little better i'll bring back benching, then as things progress, some reverse hypers, good mornings and heavy abs. Then eventually deads and some very light squats (maybe even bodyweight to start with).

Yeah, that's the one I want to qualify for Pete.

I think I would need a high 500's total to qualify at 100kg, maybe less at 90kg which I could make, but I don't want to lift at 90kg in the future really.

Hopefully there will be a qualifier around Easter next year.

Won't do the British U/E next year, as I will just be starting my practical training to become a solicitor, in fact, it would be my first or second week. Need to focus 100% on work at that time.

Hopefully will do some sort of competition in Nov/Dec 2010, not sure what fed or even if it will be powerlifting lol.

Aim when I compete is to qualify for the Brits U/E the following year (if that's allowed, if not then just put up a total).

215/135/245 being the aim!

First day of work today. The job isn't high level or anything, but it is with a company I know and have mates who work there.

Getting paid a fair wage for the job that needs doing, and best of all, free lunch!

They have a gym with a few steppers, treadmills and ellipticals, a lat pull down, a seated chest press, and a leg curl/extension.

May do some light cardio when knee is better.

Bench + Assist

Bench Press, Medium Grip, short rest 2-3 mins

Bar x8
40kg x5
60kg x3
80kg x3
90kg x3
100kg x3
110kg x3, hard obviously no leg drive!

Dumbell Benches

20kg's x5
30kg's x5
35kg's x5
40kg's x5
42.5kg's x5

Neutral Dead Hang Chin/Superset w/One arm KB OHP

Bw x4/24x10 (5 each side)
Bw x4/24x10
Bw x4/24x10
Bw x4/24x10

Workout Time: 45 mins

Comment:

Bench is going to have the arse ripped out of it over the next 6-8 weeks.

May have do go light on the volume on the benches and hammer the volume on assistance, as reliable spotters are always thin on the ground!

The Chin/KB superset was awesome, I was puffing hard by the end.

They have KB's up to 24kg I think, going to do plenty of work with them to build up conditioning and work capacity, so that i'll be in good shape for when I can squat/dead heavy again.

Forgot to add, knee is feeling a TON better. Can now walk on it properly, sans the gangster limp, which is nice.

1 month and should be back squatting again, although with a very gentle build up.

Training lower body on Monday, not sure what to do.

Do you guys think light (60-70%) deads will be a problem with the knee? The alternative is a sh1t-ton of light-ish GM's and reverse hypers (love that machine).

Yeah, good point, no particular rush.

Plan for Saturday is:

Good Morning, (stiff leg): 5x10@60kg
Revere Hyper: Moderate 5x10
45% Hyper: 3x20 @20kg
Standing ABS: 5x8

New gym is quite good actually, they have 2 Ivanko Oly bars, not great for squats or deads are they have TONS of flex in them.

Good job I won't be going above 80% on the squat for months...

Been hit with a curveball career wise, going to have to totally re-think.

This won't make much impact on my training although it is a bit depressing. I tend to do some good lifting when I have a subdued rage fizzing in my bowels.

Any ideas for careers will be appreciated LOL.

Read your progress with great interest bud, I like the deads as you do, but my best is 4 sets of 8 starting at 115-130. Kills me but at 72 kg and not putting on any good meat except belly meat, itll do! Shame about the knee, use it s a positive and build your chest to mammoth proportions!

As for the job, ever thought about the Armed Forces? Plenty of opportunity for training!

Thanks for reading the journal. 8 reps @130kg is a good starting point, your first aim should be 182.5kg/400lbs.

If you want to get stronger I would suggest lower reps and higher volume, seems to have worked well for me in the past, learning the deadlift alone will help you gain. Don't forget the best assistance for deadlift is the squat IMO.

Knee is a lot better, good morns and ham/ab work tomorrow.

Have looked into the Armed Forces mate, I even had a selection training course booked and sponsorship off a regiment, but I really value my freedom and my values don't match with those of the Armed Forces (i'm very liberal). Shame because I would love the physical training.

Looking at a few things right now, top spot is real estate.

Jesus, its taken me a bit to get to the 130!!!! Ive been training on and off for about 2 1/2 years, but have never really dedicated  myself, apart from when I was on detachment. I think I was scared of losing my fitness, I do a lot of running. My legs are testament to that! I have decided to carry on with a bit of running, but concentrate on HIIt and CV fitness, and go for it with the iron. Legs will be re-introduced forthwith.

More power to you for not selling out for a bit of money, got to stick to your guns where your morals are concerned.

That is 182.5kg for a single, if you're doing 130 for 8 (if I'm reading you correctly), you should be good for 160kg now, maybe more.

Where you based? Training with other powerlifters at least a few times is my top tip for everyone...

I've made my best progress when taken well out my comfort zone with guys way better than me, (national champions), even though I didn't feel I deserved to be there, if you work hard and don't quit, then you will be welcome.

Great thing about powerlifting is most of the top guys will take time to help you if they can, especially if they are not building up for a competition.

Last set, on a good day is 130 for 8 reps. Last week it was 115X8 117.5X8 122.5 x 8, 127.5 x 8. Im at Brize Norton, I had a week off with the wife and kids in Mallorca, and decided to give it a good go when I got back. 37 now and the last dribbles of test are flowing through my veins, so I will see how it goes. Ill have a go at a 1RM on my back day next week and tell you how it goes, do you use straps?

Never used straps mate and would never recommend them for deadlifts in most circumstances.

However, I couldn't pull heavy without chalk. I'm sure there's some powerlifters at Brize Norton, they ran a BDFPA powerlifting comp there a few years back.

Good luck, work up to 160kg in small jumps (60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 150, 160) then see how things go after that.

First Lower Body session back after knee injury

Warmup/Extra work:

Neck Harness 3x15 (10kg)
Wood Choppers, few sets

Deadlifts, careful not to use too much leg drive

60kg x3
60kg x3
100kg x1
120kg x1
140kg x1
160kg x1
170kg x1, all easy as they should be and no knee issues.

Stiff Legged Good Morn, Beltless and deep

Bar 2x10
40kg x10
50kg x5
60kg x5
70kg x5
75kg x5

Reverse Hyper

10kg x6
20kg x6
30kg x6
40kg x6
50kg x6, hard.

Pull Through (Stiff Leg), 5x10

Hanging leg raise, 2x10, knackered now.

Comment:

Nice little session. No knee issues. Have found a lifting club in Leamington for a very good price, it's a key club.

It is very basic, but they have a few Eleiko power bars, a deadflift platform, a basic squat rack, a few benches and a decent assortment of dumbells.

They also have some real old school machines, i.e. an old barbell style rowing machine and a few other pieces.

Will probs join there, I don't think I really need all the machines at the bodybuilding gym (will miss doing pull throughs and reverse hypers, but they are not essential!).
