Need expert advice! 17 March 2010 23:58 (permalink)
Hi all,

Is the following routine crazy?! ...

I've only recently started training, almost 2 months in. I started trying to do everything in a day, everyday (honeymoon period I guess!) but now have a routine I would like to run by you all. It's as follows:

Mon - abs, back, triceps, neck
Tues - abs, shoulders, legs
Wed - abs, chest, biceps

*routine repeats itself*

Thur - abs, back, triceps, neck
Fri - abs, shoulders, legs
Sat - chest, biceps

Sun - rest

My goal is to bulk up a little for summer (and onwards) I usually do 3 different exercises of 3/4 sets for each muscle, increasing in weight with each set (by the last set I am always struggling, which I guess is good)

I want to know if you think this routine is overdoing it. I understand rest is important to grow, however I've arranged the days in such a way I am leaving 2 whole days in between training each muscle (for example I do back on Monday and then wait until Thursday) I also understand that muscles are grouped in exercises, so back works bicep etc, and to get around this I don't do bicep immediately after back, but the day after (for example back on Monday, bicep on Wednesday) Same goes for tricep/ chest combo.

Does this routine make sense? I've read a lot and spoken to many people, yet I'm still unsure. My logic is because I have so much time these days (have been laid off) I can work 'smartly' (i.e strategic muscle groupings over planned days) hard to get bigger quicker. Or do I still need more rest?

Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Liam

IMO it's too much, but each to their own.

If you list the actual exercises it would give people a better idea.

I replied to the post in the other forum Liam, I've copied here and deleted the other thread.  Please just post in one or the other - you will get a reply it just takes a few hours!

Tere's some good routines in the sticky at the top of this forum, few (none?) feature this volume and frequency.

I know you have your doubts otherwise you wouldn't have asked and you're right I think. Unless you have VERY good powers of recuperation then this will be too much. I would try cycling it 3=1 repeat instead i.e.:

Mon - abs, back, triceps, neck
        Tues - abs, shoulders, legs
        Wed - rest
        Thur - abs, chest, biceps
Fri - abs, back, triceps, neck
        Sat -  rest
        Sun - rest
        Mon- abs, shoulders, legs
        Tue - abs, chest, biceps
        Wed - rest
Thur - abs, back, triceps, neck....
        etc

Unfortunately i don't know the names of the exercises, and it will take too long trying to explain them to you!

So is my routine bad because i might stress my body too much, or bad because i simply won't grow as i'm not allowing enough time to repair, regardless of leaving time between individual muscles?

I agree though, it is pretty intense (not sustainable???) but as i've been laid off recently it has been nice going to the gym. i feel more productive, which is probably why i want to go everyday! but the point is to get into shape too, so i don't want to put in extra efforts and get weaker/ slower results.

Just as a general note, I would include learning about training as one way to improve

            Yes, yes and yes.

More is not better in the gym remember that. HOWEVER this is something you can do. In the hours that you we going to spend in the gym go shopping for decent food and then cook and store it.

The battle is one and lost with the fork as well as the barbell. I believe for most nutrition is the greater part of the problem.
