Need help on this situation. 06 November 2009 02:28 (permalink)
Hey guys.

I have a good friend of mine who is interested in working out and getting bigger/fitter. It's hard for him to find a routine or possible methods because he was born with one hand (Missing at the wrist). Are there any decent routines/techniques to help him out or is there even something that he could use to grip the barbell/dumbell? Surely there has to be something out there that can make it easier for him.

Any ideas would be grately appreciated.

Cheers for your time.

Lee.

Would it not be possible for him to get a prosthetic base...ie something that attaches to the forearm made with a neoprene inner so when it was really tight it didnt hurt him then have an attachment on the end that resembled a "1-tonne-hook".
Personally i think the solid bit that covers the forearm would have to come quite far up the arm to be able to cope with the weight without falling off....
just looking at it from an engineering point of view really.
That would allow him to do pulling moves.
If the hook part also had a low powered spring and a flap it would also be safe for pushing moves such as bench etc but obviously he would have to release the catch after he put the bar down when he was doing bench etc.
    Dunno if those ideas helped.

another thing...ud have to bond some type of grippy rubber into the hook bit like a 1 tonne hook to stop it sliding on the bar or use a an over centre clamp to lock it on tightly without having to use lots of force.

www.1tonhooks.com   take a look there to see what i mean by a hook with a rubber grip.
gotta be worth a try if it lets the guy train....

As above the only real way to get a balanced wokout for the upper body would be to get a prosthetic hand or something similar.

However im gussing he may be able to do pressups, if he gets a book or something for the missing hand arm and rests on that then uses his actual hand in a fist to do the press-ups then those could be completed, everything else would be pretty tricky
