Need massive weight gain after thyriod illness

I'm brand new to this and i'll try and keep it brief: I'm about 5"6 and weight about 112lbs (8 stone), which is in the underweight range of the BMI charts. This is all due to a thyroid issue that went undiagnosed until recently and has now been fixed. But i'm stuck being very thin and in terrible physical shape fitness wise. To add to this i'm a student so don't have the cash to go to they gym, but I do have an old rowing machine in the garage for cardio. So basically i'm in need of advice on a diet (at present I eat "normal" sized meals at the standard 3 times a day). And a workout plan that I can do at home, at low cost (I can stretch to buying some cheap weights as an early xmas present). I'm also told I have a high/fast metabolism, so that may be an issue (I think I might be a "hardgainer" or "Ectomorph", every male in my family is naturally slim). Any advice would be great, hope this is posted in the right place! Mikey

mikey35 I have a similar issue although not as bad as yourself. I have to get my thyroid function checked each year.I'm told I will eventually need tablets. Add in extra protein and carbs. Extra large bits of meat, eggs, nuts to snack on. Add in a few extra meals a sandwich in the morning etc Your strength will not be there due to your thyroid. You need to start weight training. keep it to under an hour and lay off the cardio! there is no excuse when not to go to the gym just because your a student. at £30 a month thats a £1 a day. I'm sure you could give something up for a £1 a day. It's the equivalent of a bottle of coke

Mine was terrible so had it removed eventually and I take tablets for it daily - it becomes second nature like brushing you're teeth or something and apart from being skinny its as if I never had a problem, so I wouldn't worry if you do have to have them eventually. Yeah thats the issue, that my thyriod problem has sapped any strength I would have had. Is there any extremely begginer weight training routines that anyone could suggest? Or diets too, or is it literally just whatever I can get from those foods you mentioned? And I do see your point, but with the cost of accomodation and general living costs, im living in my overdraft as it is, I literally cannot afford it. I will when I finish and hopefully get a job next year but until then I cant afford it. Thanks Mikey

Have you got a garage? If not then an outside wall would probably do you for what I'm going to suggest...Pull-ups! Can you pull your own bodyweight up? If you can only do this once then do it once, rest do it again, rest again etc...soon you will be able to do 4-5reps with no rest and that will be your first set of which you need to aim for 4-5 sets...do this three times a week and nothing else...it will be very hard at first but you have to keep working at it...you don't need any weights, pull-ups is a great upper body builder, your body will be shocked into growing as long as you're eating enough... If you have a garage then put a broom handle across the beams, if not then talk to someone who could put a bar on an ouside wall, it should be easy and cost little... You get what you put it with this, at 18 I went from 10.5st to 11.5st simply doing this(6 months) so it does work believe me...but you must be eating well so that side is very important!
