Hi there !

Just found the site, it looks great and I'm dead excited !!  Stuff for women and over 40's.. or even 50's... ahem   I've just posted in the newbie's section to say hello.

Been reading all your posts and feeling inspired but still a bit unsure about what to do next..?  to cut a loooong story short;  I'm 51, fit and healthy, size 8-10 9st 8 ish, but carrying a bit of podge on my thighs and stomach, a bit puny in the arms and shoulders.  Have been going to the gym for years so in reasonable shape but wanting to take the next step.  Would love to have a go at figure-type training and realise that time is ticking on.

Would be really grateful for any advice .  Should I join a 'proper' gym?  Get a personal trainer?  Diet?  I live in the Lake District and have a job that entails daft shifts and long hours but I am disciplined and motivated and  just need some direction -  if that makes sense??

I'm not ready to be middle aged...dont wanna make jam, wear sensible shoes and a cardi !!  Great to find some other like-minded folk on here.

Cheers,

Lakeslass x

welcome to the forum!  my advice would be to join a gym, them you get all the other great things that come with it, but make sure its a nice friendly onw with good atmosphere, makes a huge difference!

the diet section is a good place to start to sort out what your eating if your not sure!

personal trainers vary from very good to, well, not good at all.  its en expensive option, so really depends on budget

      Hi and welcome to MT!

You have been going to gym for years you say, what training have you been doing, do you want to focus more on weight training now?
The diet forum is very good as Daz says, and have a read of the articles section too, lots of good information there too.

        Hi and welcome to MT

Time only ticks on if you let it. You're never too old to get into this game, in fact there are quite a few of us now on stage over the 40 mark. Proud to be one of them. Personally I think as we get older we realise there's more to life than just trying to be skinny. You appreciate how muscle can help you look younger, make you feel fitter and also gives you more confidence.....no longer do I dread getting a flat tyre on a dark lonely road, I can darn well change it myself now LOL!! In fact recently  I was the one pushing cars out of the snow when men just looked on!!

You go get 'em girl. Get yourself down a decent gym and maybe even come along to the seminar that's in the sticky post at the top of this forum section and come to meet a few of us and many more besides

Thanks so much for your advice Dazc, Hazel and Kitty

I think I've been doing the same hit and miss routine at the gym for about 5 years. I lift a few weights, nothing very heavy, do floor and other 'girly' exercises and some random cardio.. whatever I feel like on the day..   It's certainly helped me maintain a sensible weight and keep reasonably fit but that's about it.  I would really like to get into diet and a more focused and tougher regime; give it a go for the next few years to see what I can achieve.

Thanks for the invite to the seminar Kitty, that sounds like a great idea ! I'm going to spend the weekend doing my homework and reading the articles on this site and try to get in touch with a PT for a consultation.  Then put a diet into action and up the training... oooh I'm gettin excited already !

Thanks again guys for your help.. and Kitty your pic is an inspiration !!

Thanks Lakeslass. Do take care of the type of personal trainer you go for as many do not understand when a woman wants to work out with weights!!

Not sure how far up you are in the Lakes but we have a monthly meeting at the same gym as the seminar (it's a BNBF meeting but anyone is welcome). Basically we just train and chat and at this stage of the season some of us might even go out for eateries. The next one is on the 14th Feb.....romantic as we are . All it costs is the entry to the gym £4.50. If you can make it, I'd be happy to show you a few things to do .

              WELCOME!!! :-d

Why don't you post your routine up - some 'girlie' exercises, especially leg ones, I actually really rate!!!! I'm sure we can help, and a good PT will be able to help to :-0

I'd take a picture of who you want to look like, cos it helps the trainer get an idea of how much muscle you do/don't want to gain...

Thanks girls.  You both look amazing (hope that's not too    but it's true - you do!!)
Kitty I'll have a look at the work rota when I go in this afternoon, if I can get 14th Feb off then I'll def come cos Manchester is less than 2 hrs away from Windermere.

Flick I'll post up my routine asap... will be a bit embarrassing tho.. you probably lift more than I do as your warm-up  !

While I'm here, can anyone explain what the different categories are in womens competitions?  I'm a bit confused... Ta very much !

                Take care

To put it simply there are figure and physique categories. Physique class is just get as big all over and as hard as you can and with good symmetry. Figure classes are more 'scultptured' to achieve a look usually with wide shoulders and good back taper, hard legs but not necessarily as bulky as a physique competitor. Figure look is further broken down into different 'looks' depending on the federation.

Lakeslass, I've kept my journal from the beginning and my weights have gone up over time... Which shows what can be done if you put the effort in! You'll love it because with some tweaking, yours will go up in no time and you'll love it! The beginning is always the best!!
