Nike+ sportband - who owns one? How accurate are they? 13 February 2010 18:32 (permalink)
Hey guys, who owns a nike sportband?

I was thinking of buying one until I read on the nike website that it is only compatible with nike+ running shoes.

But after some research on youtube, aparantly you can just wrap the sensor in a sandwich bag, and place it behind the laces on any running shoe and it will work just the same. Anyone any experience with this.

At the minute, Im just running laps of a football pitch, so would love to find out what distance im actually running.

Whats everyones opinions on the sportband?

thanks

No idea but aren't they around £40?

I would get a bit more cash together and buy a Garmin 205 GPS running watch. They can be had for £80 on ebay or £99 in shops.

GPS obviously works via satallite and tracks exactly how far you run, what pace you're running at, total time and then you upload all the data to your PC to see a map of your run and all the info needed.

Amazing bit of kit and a bargain at under £100

It is quite big mate yeah.

It's 55mm wide, 70mm long (it bends around the wrist in it's length though) and sits off the wrist about 20mm.

Loads of women wear them though mate. Only gonna be worn whilst running so the size isn't a problem and the large screen makes it easier to see whilst running.

Here you can see how it curls round the wrist in it's length. The length that actually sits flat on the top of the wrist is 45mm

if you can mate, download a free application on your phone.  i use nokia's sports tracker, and think it brilliant, giving you all sorts of stats on your run.

or you could just get the dimenshions of the football pitch and work out how many laps makes up a mile or kilometer.

I have many mapmyrun type apps on my iphone. Some give you verbal updates on your speed, pace, minutes ran etc but I have found the GPS to be sh1te compared to the Garmin and too bulky to run with. You can't keep checking your pace as you can with a watch on your wrist.

Depends how seriously you're taking it I guess

it uses GPS on your phone and basically tracks your run.  It shows you on a map where you've been, distance travelled, speed etc.  Then if you like you can upload it the web page.
Not sure how accurate it is, but it gives me a time and adds a little extra motivation to get me out there.

Well my friend, the website I use which is AWESOME, is 'mapmyrun', just google it, you can get the satelite image like google maps but place a tracker as to where you ran and find out how far it is. You can save the run and everything, also its free!!

                                  Check it out bud

Whilst roughly correct, I find the Nike+ varies a far bit depending on my pace.  I do the same run to work twice a week, and It's been recorded from 6.5k to 8.5k and everything in between.

However, main benefit of it I find is that it helps you to track progress, record how often you're running etc. and keep the motivation going.

I've never understood the Nike + which I believe varys in accuracy.  Since it's essentually a pedometer so accuracy depends on keeping a constant stride pace.  This would be very hard to maintain so IMO would be next to useless.

GPS would seem ideal but I've also heard that it can lose it's signal around high buildings or mountains.

                                        How true is this ?
