Not fit for consumption...

I rent an old property which is serviced by the Estates own water supply - I always thought it was pretty cool, plus less bills. However the entire place is up for sale and I was having a chat with the new owners, who fortunately want me to stay and they have had the water supply tested and apparently its not fit for consumption!! I have been drinking it for three years with no ill effect (or at least I hope not) but what on earth have I been drinking - I'm not sure I actually want to know. I do know its never made a decent cup of tea since I moved here.

its probably something quite minor such as mineral content (perfectly ok but could give some the ****s). think its unlikely to be anything too scarey but without knowledge of the local area hard to say

Good call - I'm more old school when it comes to tea, need to get out the pot and use decent tea leaves. Trouble is I have a caffeine intolerance and try to shy away from it these days, so its a caffeine free tea bag. Same tea at friends taste fine, in the house taste like crap. Even my mother could not stomach it, so it must be pretty bad, she even pushed me out the way to have a go

Strangely enough the main house on the estate has a small filtration plant - nice of them to let us know lol!!

Does a glass of water have a creamy throthy head to it lol. In all fairness it depends where it comes from i.e. is it mains water but from a storage tank or is it a natural water supply such as a spring or well etc... You're still alive snd I take it healthy, and unless you are suffering from or have developed digestive problems then the chances are your fine. Did they say what strains of bacteria were present?

Isnt there some kind of legal implications to your ex-landlord allowing you to drink water that they must have known (since they have their own purification) was unfit for human consumption ?

I should say at the outset that I am no expert in potable water standards but do have some experience that may be of some use. My Sister has a smallholding in the arse end of nowhere in Wales, she is about 6 miles outside Aberystwyth and then another mile or so up a track in the hills. She has been there for about 20-25 years giving it all up to live the "Good Life" Her water comes from a borehole and when she was pregnant with her first child they insisted that the water was tested even though by that time she had been there about 5 years with no adverse affect. Her water was deemed unfit for human consumption too, being high in bacteria and phosphates and nitrates (fertiliser) she (Dad) had to pay for a new borehole to go down to about 75 meters, the old one was only about 20. It sorted the chemicals but not the bacteria. She has a UV filter, a magnetic filter and (something like) a calcine filter, still doesnt bring the water up to the required standard but has improved it significantly. Also, we waterski on Loch Lomond 2 or 3 times a year, and stay in a cottage on one of the Islands, the water there is from a borehole and there are warnings that you drink it at your own risk. Every single time we stay we all have bad guts for a day or two and then all is well. Often the bacteria is just different to what you are used to, not necessarily harmful and your gut gets used to it, sounds like you are very much used to it by now!

If only Tony were still here. He's the authority on whether your water supply is fit for consumption...

During my travels I've probably had a fair few glasses of water that wasn't fit for consumption by our standards. Think of it this way, at least you have an iron stomach now. You could probably drink straight from the sewer and your tummy would brush it off. :D
