Fair points but I think you are both overlooking how your rivals have strengthened (or not in a couple of cases admittedly) from last season too; I certainly wouldn't go overboard on Aquilani yet either - let's see him stay fit for a couple of months before we say anymore eh?

I doubt Cole will score as many goals as Benayoun tbh and again lets see if he can stay fit for a couple of months before we get too excited.

Riera was no world beater but he wasn't the worst either and at least brought balance to the side.

In fact, not being funny but you seem to have a lot of injury-prone players at the club at the moment which doesn't bode well for next season.

IMO you finished where you did last season because quite simply there was no strength in depth in the squad and if key players were out the quality of the replacement was not there.

I do not see what has changed since last season tbh.

Exactly, we haven't got weeker.

I agree with you about injury prone players.  That is a major downfall of ours.

Also I didn't say we would be in the top 4, I just said I hope we don't go backwards.

The squad to be fair is not a lot different than last season as it is now.
Joe Cole foe Benayoun imo is a better deal, keeping Cole fit is the issue.
Babel's not good enough imo and even with a fresh start, he wont do much.
Riera, Degen etc, not good enough to begin with so good ridance.
Jovanovich, not seen much of him but apparently decent, we'll see.
This all makes it look good. However......

The transfers havent finished and if Mascherano fukcs off, his replacement WILL BE Lucas....
Not mention that Aquilanis entire career has been plagued by injury. I expect to lose him for half the season atleast.

Our downfall is other teams strengthening, that will keep up out of the top 4 for sure. We are a million miles behind Chelsea, Manure and Arsenal imo, and Man sh1tty should be right up there in the top tier this year. Id say were fairly level with spurs and Villa. 5th place finish at best. Below 7th is now a realistic possibility...

No I know mate my response was to Ice & John Cappa. However, interesting that you say "we haven't got weaker" rather than we have got stronger; suggests that you agree with me rather than Mr Icemansoldier?

Don't forget the transfer window has over a month to go and I see that Torres is 1/3 to be at Chelsea next season as I write this. If you lose him & Mascherano then you really are fooked as there is no chance of like for like replacements being brought in due to lack of funds.

Whether that happens or not I stand by my opinion that you will not be in the top 4 next season - Man City will be a top 4 side next season, presumably at Spurs expense IMO.

Of course we can debate all we like (which is great fun and long may it continue) but only time will tell...........................

When i said 3rd to 7th, i meant 3rd if things go our way, injury free, keep squad as it is, add a decent left back. 3rd after last season would be a dream to be honest lol!

As redman said, our best players are made of glass currently.

Torres 1/3 for chelsea means little really. Just the bookies protecting themselves as chelsea are the only club that he can move to. No one else could afford him (and he aint going to city)

The thing with Torres, Gerrard and Mascherano is that if we sold them and used the money to replace them and add a few extra squad players we would be right in the mix for Champs league.

But by keeping them we can always have that little thought in our mind that a few more quality players and we will be title contenders.  We are stuck in limbo, the sooner the owners leave the better.

Hes a good attacker and ok defensively, he hasnt lived up to his hype or lpool wouldnt of let him go, looks like hes only back so we dont have to shelf out for a left back.

Yerp, I called it, knew we would re-sign him. Hodge wanted him at Fulham so it was a no brainer.

He is class, I am well pleased.  Still need another left back if Insua ties up his deal with the Viola early this weak. I don't see why we shouldn't just go for salcido from psv for 2.5mil.  That means with the mash money, IF we get it all to spend then we can get someone cheap to play defensive mid like Poulson then use the rest on a striker.

Salcido looks pretty good, and at 2.5m that aint much. Its just a matter of getting as much as we can for masc now he wants to leave, a good 25m or so.

Villa has came out and said this season will be lpool's last chance to keep torres and said after the WC he thought torres would sign for chel, but that chel mustnt of met lpool's valuation...

Just seen our squad today, Insua has started at left back with fabio on the bench.  Looks like the Insua deal could have fallen through for sure.

Well it's no coincidence that Man City were bought in preference to Liverpool or even Man Utd. Basically, Liverpool are a far from attractive financial proposition at the moment and worse still they desperately need a bigger stadium, to drive up revenues, for which there are no funds.

I really think you would have to "drop lucky" with some billionaire who would be prepared to pump massive funds into the club as I do not see some sort of consortium making vast changes tbh.

Having said that attendances were tailing off last season so maybe Anfield is plenty big enough seeing as the team is in decline LMAO.

The Arabs weren't in it for money, they just want a play thing.

I will just be happy to get an owner that lets us spend what we make!

Hicks and Gillett have brought us f.ck all, Torres was off the back of our own success, 2 champions league finals in 3 years.

Anyway Hicks and Gillett haven't found a seller, the deadline has now passed.  Sell the club as cheap as possible without those leaches making a penny.  Would love this.  Look how desparate Gillett is, he is trying to bring to the table a bidder he claims to have found at the last minute with completely fabricted finacial backing just to delay matters.  Prise cock, get them out!!

i'm against billionaire investment IMO.

look at portsmouth (my team), milan mandric poured millions into the club then sold it to gaydemek (sp).
From a championship bottom dwelling club to one that played a good 1/3 of the england team

defoe
crouch
johnson
james
campbell

then you had
diarra
muntari

no new stadium was built then when gaydemek pulled out....woooooooosh

hello championship, goodbye players!

Yeah, all joking aside I hope the Yanks get what they deserve somewhere down the line; clearly not interested in the club and motivation was purely financial. Bit like the Glazers arse raping Man U but on a smaller scale. Fcuking tw4ts!!!

This could start to get interesting, looks like things are progressing.  The FA have been approached, inside sources on RAWK state the Liverpool board have been in a meeting today.  As predicted Gillet is trying to scupper the deal with nonsense bids, so too Hicks by bringing the Rhone Group deal to the table.  Broughtons reputation is on the line, lets hope he earns his crust and does whats best for Liverpool FC.  With RBS pressuring the deal this could well go through.

Lets wait and see.

IB, same thing happened with my team West Ham. The Icelandic guys bought in, over-spent heavily and created a unsustainable business model and then they went bankrupt, leaving us to nearly go bankrupt too!

At least now we have Gold and Sullivan, who despite my personal opinions on them, are supporters of the club, are making the right moves in regards to back room staff and playing staff and other things.

Despite our big debt we've bought in Hitzelberger, Barrera, Piquonne (hmmm), Ben Haim and now we're closing on a deal for Reid (New Zealand international CB), so things are looking up. We've had a good pre-season 5 wins and 1 draw, conceding only 1 goal.
Keiron Dyer is back from injury and playing well, so hopefully we can get at least 1 good season from him considering all the money he's had from us!

We've got some nice youth players coming through, as always, thanks to Mr Tony Carr MBE!
We've managed to keep hold of Parker, Behrami, Green and Cole so far (touch wood), so that's another good sign.

I'm hopeful for this season, mid table would do nicely, then to slowly build up, take the Olympic Stadium, and then challenge for Europe again.

OK, the times will be breaking the news tomorrow that Huang will be in fact fronting a bid backed by China Investment Corporation.

This is serious business, we are talking a sovereign wealth fund.  If Huang can complete the takeover Liverpool will be the richest club in the world.

Yep I know what you mean.  We have been let down far too often.  Well I'm guessing if they do take us over, they will be a hell of a lot more sensible than City, can't see us spunking 30 odd million on overrated players that just stand up front doing sod all.  The plans sound good, new 60,000 stadium and we will have no interest payments so we would get to spend more of what we earn.  Could have a decent honest kity each year.  As long as everything holds up, this deal would make so much sense, we even have standard chartered across our chests now, I bet they would kill for that exposure in China.  I'm sure they will be pushing the deal.

Really enjoyed the game last night, we played some lovely football.  Obviously the opposition were poor but some of the one touch passing, flicks and tricks were fantastic to see.  I remember every now and then we would have a game like that under Rafa where the shackles seemed to be off, but now with Cole and Pacheco coming through lets hope we play like this more often under Hodge.  Jova looked top notch too.  Gerrard looked back to his best playing in the heart of midfield alongside Lucas.

Nice clips of Joe Cole running the show last night:
