PROTEIN, FAT AND CARBS 08 February 2012 23:53 (permalink)
Hi all,
I have asked a competitive bodybuilder i know for help on my diet after deciding this is the year i get cut. I  gave him my height, weight etc and he worked out my total cals for each day which are 3400, the ratio he said to use is 55% carbs 25% fats and 20% protein . I am gonna work out my cals each day using cal counter and make sure i hit the totals .
Im not doubting what iv been told as he is in very good shape and the proof is in the pudding so to speak, but does anyone have any input on the percentages?, the protein looks a little low and i have worked out im only gonna be eating 170g per day and im weighing in at nearly 15 stone .
Im gonna be dropping 300 cals a day every few weeks from carbs when my weight loss slows down which aint a problem, my starting carb target is 470g a day do you think this should be lower and protein higher from start ?? cheers all

Rather than working off of percentages I prefer to work off of g/lb of bodyweight.
There's research supporting using both percentages and g/lb.  Both will most likely produce similar results.

    You're about 210lbs, what bf% are you?

Generally I'd aim for 1g/lb of bodyweight, perhaps 0.8g/lb if you're bodyfat% is high.
I'd aim for around 0.25 - 0.5g /lb bodyweight for fat (How much you choose is personal preference.

I then fill whatever calories are left with carbs.

As I said this is how I do it, different people have different methods.  All methods have similarities (Calorie deficit, sufficient protein/fat)

The only reason I don't work off of percentages for macros is because as you reduce your calories you will be reducing the essential nutrients.  I set my protein/fat to a base and keep it constant.  Change the energy in my diet through increasing/decreasing carb content.

Guess it would depend if if you believe in the protein type, carb type and mixed type, type of people. If this is true and we are all different then different mixes of macro nutrients would have different effects depending on your genetic make up.

hi Liddy , my bodyfat is around 20% at mo which is the reason im cutting, got a decent amount of muscle underneath through years of training but with a few injuries and family/work iv let myself become lazy so acting now ha.

The starting point of diet is
Carbs 465g protein 170g fats 95g i will be keeping protein and healthy fats the same throughout and reducing carbs as i progress , it just seems protein a little low to start .

looks like alot of carbs to me for cutting. i work it out on grams per pound of body weight, i guess in % terms my cutting diet would usually be around protein 40%:carbs 40%:fat 20% with days off a lot lower carbs

i think you should be eating more protein than you have said but thats just my opinion and if this guy is in good shape then maybe give his way a try. no harm in trying and everyone is different

I don't see the point in going much above 1g/lb bodyweight unless you're very deep into contest prep and are very lean or are on a very calorie (and carb) restricted diet.

Other than that research supports 1g/lb, as you have a high bf% I would say 170g is sufficient and since you have plenty of carbs that will spare protein from being broken down and this is why you need less.

Keep doing it as you're doing it, if you want more protein there's no harm in throwing more in.  Why not go for 1g/lb, any more than that is really personal preference.
