Paleo/caveman diet 06 February 2012 08:18 (permalink)
has anyone on here tried or know anything about the paleo/caveman diet?

My goals are more focused towards cardio and mma but I still keep a good size and strength is important to me. A lad who I train with who also fights professionally swears by this type of diet. His mantra is "if you can't kill it or grow it then it's no good".

I am looking to lose quite a lot of fat whilst maintaining strength and energy levels. He claims to eat meat, fish, eggs and veg (he says fruit is person dependant on how u react to it) He also does 24 hours fast periodically and claims they make him feel energised

I know lost a shedload of fat on keto diet but the trade off was feeling like crap, however he claims this is not the case on this diet. Does anyone know about this, or has done it? Any reading? I am not one for being anal over my diet but I find these types od diet easier to stick to as it's cutting out certain foods rather than measuring quantities

Any thoughts or input appreciated

I follow a Paleo diet 75% of the time, definitely helps whenever I have a flare up of my Colitis and is great for leaning out. If you're making the switch from a high carb diet to paleo the first week or so can be harsh (tiredness, bad breath etc) as your body adapts to burning fat rather than carbs. After that initial period you then tend to feel more enrgetic than you did before, in my experience.

Once you've achieved your health/weight goals you can then add in some more paleo friendly starches such as sweet potatoes/yams etc to help refueling after workouts.

I find fasting now and again beneficial, for me it just seems to give my digestive system a break. However, the fast I follow (only done 2-4 times per year) is a 60 hour fast, the first 24 hours of which is also a water fast.

Paleo diet for athletes is very good if you want to read up about it, also gives you very practical info on planning out a diet and the need for refuelling.

i eat like this probably 80% of the time at the moment, when my body comp slips i tighten up. I also do MMA and have no problems with strength and recovery at all.

as an approach to dieting it is very good imo as although 'Paleo' doesnt really exist as such, the principles you follow are much healthier than most other diets.

BigD - is that a book?

Thanks for the replies, Drews blog is very useful. Is there any rule for how much pro/fat per day like 60/40? Wuld I still structure like a typical diet of 5/6 meals a day?

Will give this a whirl for 8 weeks and post pics at the end, I am very I sulin sensitive and get fat easily especially on higher carbs so these type of diets give me good results it's just the energy issues that have bothered me in the past

energy wise i have a lot more when eliminating things such as sugar and gluten anyway, so this really suits me.

in terms of a macro split i would do a straight swap to what you're doing now, the book goes through the stages of planning a diet around training.
