Poundstone's BB curl training/competition - 16 October 2009 17:00 ( #1 )
Apparently Derek Poundstone does BB curls with just the Oly bar, and can do 110 reps. If it's good enough for him then it's good enough for you lot, so let's see/hear how many reps you can get curling just an olympic bar (no plates etc)!

Yeah I mentioned this in my Strongman Training article.

The reason behind it is to build bicep endurance for truck pull and to help prevent tears when the biceps are pumped.

I've done 2 sets of 50reps and its not fun!

Marshall White did close to 140 in under 2mins, and I'm sure Poundstone is close to 150reps rather than 110.

I would never do that myself!! I personally feel it is a complete waste of time!!

Just because poundstone does it doesn't mean it is a good thing to do! I would bet every penny I have you wouldn't catch Big Z doing something like that or even Mariusz for that matter

Seriously mate, you don't want to try it! Absolute agony for days after it, I'm sticking to Ezbar or hammer curls!

Hope the holiday was good mate!

How come, don't straight bar curls agree with you?

It said 110 reps in M&F I'm fairly sure.

My mate did 24 reps in my gym, though he'd been training his back first so he wasn't very fresh. I couldn't resist having a quick go, though I wasn't doing a work out and had done some hammer curls the day before, and stopped at 30 reps, since it was more than my mate did and a round number.

I found it quite funny, feeling the tension and lactic acid building up slowly and knowing it's going to start hurting if you keep going long enough. I'm sure I could beat 30 reps quite easily, but I can't say I feel inclined to have another go, but at least I gave it one go and set a low bench mark for others to try and beat.

So there's no excuses now, let's hear some more!

If it was something I thought was worthwhile I would be more than happy to try and beat his record! For me it is a pretty pointless exercise! Just my opinion of course

BSB said what the reasoning behind it was, but I guess if Poundstone does that all the time you'd need to get used to training that way before you could beat him so I'll let you off, this time!

57 (and a half). Started getting tough about 40. Suppose it is something to try once a month or so for me. Didn't really enjoy it I  must say. Felt a bit pointless.

Well I don't remember ever seeing it as an event and he said it helps him for truck pull which I beat him at twice at WSM this year! Fact is Derek is a good strongman but I think that is a complete waste of time!

Yes Derek did beat me at WSM this year but I can assure you it's not cause he does bicep curls with an empty bar!!

I don't think even heavy BB curls would be considered an important exercise by most strongmen!

Hammer Curls are king IMO, help with stones, tyre flip and other loading like kegs for instance.

I do heavy hammer curls and then every so often Ez-Bar curls for higher reps.

I don't feel the need to do any direct bicep training (can't think of anything more boring!), and I've never felt that my biceps have been the weak link in any strongman event I've ever done.

(I'm just a mediocre u105 strongman though!)
