Protein shake problems 08 February 2012 21:02 (permalink)
Hi all,

Firstly, I'll introduce myself. My name is David, I am 25 years old from Derbsyhire. I have been training for the past month and a half with the goals of losing body fat and toning muscle around my waist and stomach, and building upper body muscle. I stand 5' 11" tall and currently weigh 12 stone 4 pounds. I train every other day with weights and do at least 20 minutes cardio every day.

I decided last week that I would like to start using a protein shake as there was no way I could get enough protein in my body from eating alone (I am basing this on the theory of consuming 1g of protein per 1lb of body weight). After a bit of research it seemed I certainly didn't need mass gaining shake, but an all in one lean muscle gaining shake seemed right for me. I decided to go for Sci-MX Omni MX.

Now I am following the dosage recommendations down to the letter (after a bit of research to find out what a "rounded spoon" was anyway!). I have only been using it for 3 days (6 servings now) but I suffer from what can only be described as a very dodgy stomach. I seem to be passing a lot of wind and find myself going to the toilet 3-4 times a day.  As far as I am aware I am not allergic to any food or ingredient at all. I mix it with water but did try milk for one serving with the same result.

Has anyone else had experience with this at all or is it just my body adjusting? I'm looking forward to seeing the benefits of using a protein shake, but I'm not sure I can withstand my upset stomach on a permanent basis.

    Hi and welcome,

First off the wind is normal side effect from a high protien diet. Try working in a family restaurant with this problem :).
You say you cant get enough protien from whole foods so have resorted to shakes, which is fine as long as you are getting most of your portien from foods, just be aware its 1g of protien per kg of muscle! not body weight. If you want to build muscle, simple aim for closer to 2g of protien per kg of muscle weight.

I am sure there are others who can describe this in much better detail than I can, however what I can say is I seem to find it easier loosing my excess fat (still some way for me to go) when using shakes, there is some science to prove this and I will try and find it for you.

    Hope this helps mate

Pain is just weakness leaving the body!

with the goals of losing body fat

but an all in one lean muscle gaining shake seemed right for me.

      1. "losing bodyfat" - need to have a calorie defecit, i.e. eat less

      2. "a lean muscle gaining shake" - to gain muscle you need to have a surplus of calories, i.e. eat more

See the problem with the way you are thinking

you need to have a calorie defecit, you dont need a weight gain shake which what that product is. You will do fine with a plain whey protein shake.

You could however fit the shake into your calorie needs, so see how many calories you need to maintain your current weight, subtract 500. then do up a diet for the day and include the shake in your total daily calories, this way you can still lose bodyfat while trying to maintain your muscle mass - but you will more than likely NOT add muscle as you need to have a surplus of calories to do this.

dont do this - its just a guide.

you need to have YOUR specific calorie and macro dosage

one person might need 3 servings, you might only need 1.

All depends on your total calorie intake and calorie needs.

Best to go to the diet section and get cracking on your diet.

Good advice above from guys , I think as you say your body will adjust .It affects people in different ways usually just with wind.

Its a good point this as so many people say oh that protein is rubbish I took it at first and was going to the toilet all the time I now only use this one.9 out of 10 times its just the side affects of starting a high protein diet and your body adjusting. If it carrys on then thats a different story but I think 1 -2 weeks is about normal

Get out of this mindset. Whey is not a drug, it is food. There is no 'dosage'. Unless you would also say something like 'I have increased my dosage of chicken', then just accept whey for what it is, food, and factor it into your diet accordingly.

              Thanks for the advice guys.

I'm going to stick with it (partly because I believe my body will adjust and partly because I bought 2 x 2kg tubs of the stuff!) however I think I'll drop to just one serving on my none gym days.

As for my losing weight and gaining muscle at the same time - I don't have alot of fat to lose, just a small amount around my stomach area. I'm thinking with the hard training I am putting in this will hopefully disappear over time.

As for my diet - well, I must say I have changed this dramtically since a few months ago. I can't say I stick to a dedicated daily setup, and I don't think I ever will, but I do eat a lot less saturated fat than I ever have (and also fat in general). I also eat a lot less bad sugar. I do struggle to eat alot of greens (I genuinely don't like any salads at all), which is another reason I went for an all in one shake as they contain many vitamins I am probably missing out on.

In that case don't expect to see significant gains either! That's the way it is unfortunately.

well done for making changes but as said above if you dont stick to a diet you wont get results, diet will dictate results

On the "fat" issue -  fat is not bad. You need to eat saturated fat also, for hormone regulation i.e. testosteone production. And eat healthy fats i.e. nuts, flaxseed, olive oil, peanut butter etc

if you want to lose the belly fat, stick to a strict diet and if you dont have much to lose then it will be gone a a matter of weeks depending on bodyfat levels and goal

OK so I've just counted up my calorie intake from yesterday and it comes to 3050. I assume this is far more than I am burning, but how do I know this? I mean how do I find out how many calories I burn on a regular basis?

Sorry if this has gone off topic by the way, but can't see much point in starting a new one.

                    Thanks

                      Forget the recommended servings.

If it is 25g that is a little amount.

My advice would be - 50g in a shaker with 500mls water - more water is better for you now - over time this can be reduced.

As for wind - never had it from protein shakes and I take upto 400g per day!

As I get older however I find the one issue you can have is drinking a big shake in one hit - you give your body 80g actual protein in 3 seconds like eating a 400g steak in 3 seconds - kind of - can take a few extra seconds for that to settle!

More fibre in thy diet as well is always good!
An Alterego is a paradoxical escape.

Try enzymes or a isolate as it sounds like you are being affected by the lactose in the whey you are taking. Eating Pineapple helps a lot.
