Quark Fruit Smoothie before bed when cutting? 29 October 2009 10:25 (permalink)
Hey,

I am cutting at present and have recently found a way to stomach 250g of Quark before I go to bed.

The only problem is it includes around 100g of fruit (frozen mixed berries) and 2 tsp of sweetener (splenda).

It tastes delicious although I'm concerned that by consuming the fruit I'm spiking my insulin before I go to bed.

My knowledge of fruit and it's effect on insulin levels is pretty limited so if someone could give me an idea whether or not this is a good idea or not I'd be grateful.

Cheers,
Jock

textbook knowledge will tell you that fruit and sweetner will have very little effect on insulin.
Fruit is usually predominantly fructose - which is stored in the liver and sweeteners - precious little research on effect on insulin response.

    However, my personal opinion.
Avoid fructose when cutting - when the liver store is full then you put fat down more easily, fructose only replenishes the liver - which is often quite full anyway - any excess is fat - bingo no problem. Exercise depletes muscle glycogen, and then the liver if needed - although the body protects liver stores to run the brain and red blood cells - and lets muscle deplete - which for means avoiding fructose as much as possible.
Before bed you are giving this store a fill just before a fast - i dont see this as promoting fat burining while you sleep.

Now if that opinion wasnt controversial - this one is:
I do have a paper on this somewhere - the only one I have found. Oral rinse with sweetner has been shown to elicit a rise in insulin as the body expects sugar.
To me actually swallowing it is sending a much stronger - here comes sugar signal - and so will give a much larger insulin response.
no studies to prove this - but it follows from what we already know,

So i would be avoiding sweetner when cutting and fruit before bed :)

Thanks for the informative answer Les, plenty in there for me to ponder.
