Quotes for roofing work
28 January 2012 10:44
( permalink)
Finally getting my bathroom roof sorted. Builder no1 quoted £140 for 2 tiles needing replaced and a patch of the hole in the felt, depending on how much he discovered needed done when he actually started the job. Is this reasonable enuff cost? He arrived on time and visually inspected the roof just.

The majority of the cost is for labour, the tiles and the felt are relatively cheap. If you said it takes him 3 hrs @ £25 an hour, materials say £20, a bot for ladders, plant etc then I'd say around £100 is fine. A lot depend on how many tiles he needs to strip to replace the felt. It's hard to say without actually seeing the extent of the work!

Thanks mate, tbh i thought it would be more. Have another builder coming this morning hopefully to give another quote so can compare them. it's 3 broken tiles at one end of the roof that were broken and resealed last year while the guttering was getting done. The fella who did the guttering didnt actually mention he's broken them, just sealed them and said nothing.

its not a big job and the materials are cheap, covering his costs and making some money I would suggest about a £100 is a fair price. If you go with £60 guy make sure you tell hom you want the felt repaired too.

Update. Job done, good few slates needing replaced as it turned out, very brittle. I reckon the damaged gutttering that was there for maybe years had something to do with that. Constant waterfall when it rained heavy. £80 including the patch job to the hole in the felt, which they did with some special watertight latex paint, so am happy enuff.

Fair price for the slating work IMO... the highlighted bit is just builder speak for 'we bodged the fook out of the felting repair' - anything referred to as 'special' I will ALWAYS be suspicious of, but i'm sure it will be fine

Yup, if they are quiet then most will try and milk a big job out of it that's for sure!
