Rugby shape-up 2012 05 January 2012 13:49 (permalink)
Well, here goes another shot. I entered one a year ago I believe, and I was actually doing pretty well until we lost the internet courtesy of Talktalk and I lost interest.

This is a rugby shape-up due to the goals mainly being fitness and performance based, but I also need to drop around 10kg for my intended change of position from Prop to flanker, so I imagine I should be looking a lot better by the end of it anyway. As it´s too early for pictures, let me paint you some mental ones.

Current weight - 111kg
Height - 6´1
Bodyfat% - God knows, probably 25%
Natural, no supps either
Goals:
Drop to 100kg dry
Vastly improve cardiovascular ability, both aerobically and anaerobically
Improve speed - focus on acceleration
Improve power
Maintain some semblance of strength

I actually think 12 weeks is a pretty good time frame for this, most of it should come naturally with the drop in weight. The main problem will be getting the calorific balance right - something I´ve got very wrong in the past. That being said, I fully intend to play it by ear as calorie counting makes me want to jump under a bus.

Won´t be updating this as much as I´d like to as I don´t own a computer, recently had my work contract finish (Barcelona) and so currently out of work, so even the internet cafe is a bit of a luxury until I find more work. Once or twice a week perhaps.

Will weigh myself every Monday morning on the scales in the gym to keep an eye on how things are going weight-wise, currently sore as hell after the first half of the week training after nothing for 2 weeks due to Christmas!

Good luck all.

          Thursday

          Am:
          30 minute jog

PM: First rugby session after Christmas:

Good little session. Tomorrow is a big Spanish holiday and this weekend is a friendly game against weaker opposition so the turn-out wasn´t fantastic. Worked a lot on our rucking and supporting the ball carrier, including a 7´s game at the end on a full size pitch, so good to get the lungs blowing again! Hitting some good angles with my runs in open play, rucking hard and winning balls when I get there, just need to keep grafting when I´m exhausted and start getting used to chasing the ball around - the positional change isn´t gonna happen by itself!

          Friday

Big Spanish holiday, no gyms or anything open for that matter. Not training today to keep myself fresh for the game tomorrow, there´s no such thing as a friendly in rugby!

Ok, lets get some pictures up! I apologise for the alien facebut Id just been woken up by the girlfriend and told I had to do it now, so if my face hasn{t quite woken up yet, don{t be scared! On a sidenote, I HATE SPANISH KEYBOARDS. I had some trouble getting a photo with the BBC news on it, its news about Nigeria being Nigeria and is currently on the front page of the BBC news website.

                        Saturday

Well, so much for them being easy opposition! In the end we had a mixed team, and by mixed I mean that only three of us including myself played for the first team, everyone else was 2nd team, although to be fair we did have a lot of fringe players who played very well.

Got to play number 8 for the entire match which was a nice suprise. We had some old boys rocking up who could only play front row, and as this twelve weeks is about a change of position for me, an early opportunity to play in the back row was very welcome! Ended up playing a good game including getting the winning try to see us winners by 12 to 7. Big physical game with plenty of tackling and grafting to be done, left me very sore and bruised but only one proper injury to speak of. Dislocated my thumb at the start of the season and it´s been ****ed ever since. It´s currently twice the size of my other thumb and I can´t bend it, hopefully it´ll be more flexible for cleans tomorrow!

Big game next Saturday so preparing for a good week of training.

Woke up too late to do my morning HIIT as I still had my brothers dog to walk, currently in the middle of an unusual living situation, so walked the lovely old boy for a good 2 hours around Barcelona.

                              Felt good on these today!

Diet has been alright and weighed myself this morning to confirm a start weight of 110.4kg

Frustrated by some handling errors and a low turnout, but physically we did a lot of running and some tackling practice, som a good workout. Rugby practices are 2 hours long.

20 minutes cardio on bike, uphill setting. Pulse around 160, hit 7,5km again, dripping with sweat! Good chance of losing a bit of water weight this week, which although deceiving, always makes me feel better.

Diet is butappalling at the moment but Im broke at the moment, so currently living off eggs, rice, lettuce and salt. 3 euros a day, cant really complain! Going to start adding in beef when I get some more cash, and fruit and veg.

Pretty hungover, big rugby barbecue last night, meat straight off the bone and a limitless supply of red wine, NOM NOM NOM!

                                      Thursday

Rugby training. Another good 2 hour session although my thumb really is ****ed, can´t lift in the line-out and it just generally hurts all-the-****ing-time. Still, a lot of fitness drills tonight, handling and defensive lines. We´re starting to incorporate slow balls from the ruck with a 4 man pod, two as short runners and two running from deep; pretty basic stuff in England but baby steps over here. Got a good feeling about running from deep and angling just next to the ruck between the guard and the ruck itself.

Big ****ing game this weekend. Last time we played we lost 22-21 due to a few awful refereeing decisions, and I still haven´t forgiven them. Investing in some powerful painkillers so I can get through the game.

Later tonight is either a light gym session followed by some cardio, or a bodyweight circuit down at the beach. Will decide later.

Feeling fitter and better already towards the end of week 1.

Ended up doing a light jog, a very light circuit and some stretches in preparation for the game on Saturday.

Big, big game. Last time we played Sant Boi we lost by 1 point, 22-21. Everyone was raring to go and we inflicted the biggest defeat they´ve suffered in a decade: 51-10. Managed to get a lovely try and put myself around the park as much as I could, I was completely blowing out of my arse in the second half!

Of course I then went and completely ruined any physical progress gained from the game by getting paraletic post-game, wandered home at 7am and lost the whole of Sunday, my only rest day, feeling very sorry for myself.

So, it´s been exactly one week. My weekly weigh-in put me at 109.6kg, a loss of 0.8kg, pretty much bang on target for my goal and considering the two huge nights out I´ve had, it could be a lot worse! Added some extra cardio in this week, aiming for a full kilogram drop this time down to 108.5.

                                        Warm-up

                                        Deadlifts:
                                        10x60kg
                                        8x100kg
                                        3x5 150kg
                                        1x3 165kg
Dropped the last triple as my lower back was exhausted.

                                        Clean and Press:
                                        10x55kg
                                        8x60kg
                                        3x5 75kg
                                        1x3 85kg
                                        1x2 90kg
                                        1x1 100kg BOOM

Incredibly happy with the clean and press. Felt knackered after the deadlifts but gave myself a mental kicking and decide to go for broke. Went for some heavy lifts and got the big 100 for a single, although admittedly with the ugliest clean ever seen.

25 minutes cardio on the exercise bike, setting 5. 10km.

Got a circuit later that I´ll edit in sometime.
