Sets per exercise?

Guys, Not sure if this has been asked before but whats the average amount of sets for a good chest and back workout. Ive read that chest should be between 12-16 sets, is this the same for back as its in the big muscle group? I currently do 11 sets for chest including warm up and 17 sets for back.

Think you'll get varied answers mate, average would be about 12 for a major I'd say....that'd be for back aswell, I couldn't do 17 sets for back, 10 and I'm done really!

It's not so much about the quantity as the quality. Do as many warm up sets as you need, not working too hard on any of them. Then do between 3 and 5 working sets on each exercise. N.B. working sets are ones where you couldn't have done another rep.

For me personally at the moment I do 3 working sets on each exercise. If I do say 5 sets on a single exercise I start to get bored of it and lose concentration.

i would say for large body parts. 8 - 12 sets. I couldnt do more than 12 to be honest im wiped out by then. for smaller body parts. 6 - 9 sets. again after 9 sets im done in.

As you can see there are slight variation in the replies. No one is right or wrong, simply have a try out with various ranges to see what fits well for you. Personally i like 3 to 5 sets per exercise (working sets), with 2 or maybe 3 exercises per bodypart. Although some days feel different to others and i may twist the workout a little based on instinct on that given day. A routine does'nt have to be rigid.

Thanks for your feedback guys, very varied but then again its true it depends on how you feel on the day. I did chest yesterday and did 14 sets i was completely wacked out by the last exercise but i did feel i did more than jus doing 3 sets on chest. My main aim when training is keeping my form nice and tight as i do train on my own and dont have any spotters. Guys just another thing do you guys ever do drop sets? Ive read that its good to add drop sets in during yoor training regime occassionly.
