Shin Splints? (with pictures!)
08 February 2012 10:35
( permalink)
I did this at rugby on Saturday (see pictures below) and at first I was convinced it was a knee or a stamp or something but I tried to do some jogging last night and both shins (inside, near bottom) absolutely killed. Could this be shin splints? I've read that if the muscle tears away from the bone then it can cause severe bruising and swelling like I've got but because you don't use the muscles it doesn't feel like a muscle tear or something. You can sort of see the swelling in the second picture although it looks worse in real life. When I initially did it, it swelled up so much that people thought my bone had snapped and was sticking out! Should I see a doctor or just rest it?

You're missing out Rach, the pics are the best bit! Have a look if you can. Got an appointment with GP in the morning but in my experience when it comes to sporting injuries they just advise to rest it. We'll see.

i used to suffer from shin splints when i used to play more than 1 football match a week and train a day later. i always found that resting for a week or so inbetween sports helps and gradually it improves. the doctor will just tell you the same thing. Ibuprofen before a match or game next time helps alot and stops the inflammation of the muscle on your shin.

Doctor said it's just bruising and just needs rest but I'm lucky my leg didn't break because it must have been close. I mentioned the fact that my other shin hurts in the same place and she said it probably took a bit of a knock at the same time although I'm not convinced, as per usual! I'll take it a bit easy anyway and hopefully it'll get better. Edit: Must have posted at the same time as you, Rach. Thanks, let me know what your colleague thinks.

Nope, not that I know of. The other leg doesn't have a mark on it. Everything happens a in a bit of a blur when you're at the bottom of a ruck though but I would imagine they'd be a bruise on the other side too if that were the case.
