Shoulder Press Before Deadlift
28 February 2010 22:51
( permalink)
Ive been doing Frankie NY's routine for six weeks now, and most of the lifts have increased each session. Especially deadlift, I LOVE deadlifts! But here's the thing...after 5 x 5 deads, I'm kinda gassed, and I do standing shoulder press in the same session. My lower back gives way before my shoulders do, so I'm struggling to progress. Some say I ought to do lagging lifts first when I have the most energy, but wouldn't I be compromising my deadlift then? Is it best practise to do the biggest, most GH releasing lifts first so I can put the most effort in? Or would you guys say I might as well do the standing shoulder press first? I definitely don't want to do shoulder press seated, I like my strength to cross over into everyday use and I dont know of any situation at work where i would have to lift something heavy over my head while sitting down! Cheers

Great question. Recently some studies have shown that GH release from larger compound exercises actually does not affect hypertrophy in other muscle groups as much as once thought, if at all. If you find your overhead pressing is compromised by deadlifting then I would OH press first. This should not affect your energy levels too much, and the pressing structure is not particularly involved in deadlifting (I would not advise heavy leg or back work before deadlifting, however). See how you manage. sel

The OHP will likely just help warm you up for the deadlifts; they shouldn't take much (if anything at all) out of your deadlift performance

As said no need to worry. Do the OH work before the deadlifts not probs.

I always have to do OH press first, otherwise my reps and weight go down. As stated do it first and you'll still have enough in the tank after.

Tried it tonight doing OH press first, was great doing them with a fresh back and increased the load, and my deadlift went up again to the magic (well, for me it is) 100kg for 5 x 5. You can laugh, but Ive only been training for 6 weeks after a two year layoff!
