Shoulder injury
06 December 2011 21:05
( permalink)
Hi all I have had an injury in the left shoulder for over a year, in which time the last month or two I have seen a physio. She has now said that an MRI is now needed to look for any bone that could be causing an issue on the tendons and to look at the tendons inflamed (white on scan). The effects of all this could now be a cortisone injection but they don't know the exact area to put it or stop weights completely (load through shoulder) and just work on the physio. I have always trained as correctly as possible, never forced it to a point of direct injury and looked after myself (no roids or other supplements along those lines). Has anyone gone through this? Please say this will end with a positive!

i feel your frustration mate and if you are not happy or not getting the answers you need or want it makes it even worse. with the best form in the world though if something isnt in alignment it can stilll cause stress to the internal workings of your shoulder and in fact the rest of your body so really you need a full assessment to check how everything is functioning to ensure the root cause is addressed first and it could mean avoiding cortisone injections if the stress can be taken away with some simple techniques my concern for you is the fact 'they' dont even know where to inject!!!! what??? thinking it is one thing but telling the patient ....*sigh*.....(holding head in hands!) find a professional you can trust to give you a full check over mate

I would imagine it's a case of needing to localise the structures to target the cortisone with Rach, rather than not knowing what they're doing with the syringe! The MRI would presumably provide this information.

Thanks for the replies, there is indeed frustration and a feeling of not knowing. Saw my GP today and a letter from my physio had arrived asking to be referred to an osteopathic surgeon at my local hospital, the GP agreed after a chat and not waiting to get an appointment. The pain comes from various points, here it goes, what feels from the biceps/front delt meeting. Top and side of shoulder and shoulder blade. The pain, which is very painful, is at its most when doing chest. If I attempt to do a set and complete it (at a weight of 40% of what I used to do) the arm goes deadish and heavy.

Sounds to me like it's shoulder tendonitis. This is very likely when there is a considerable strength imbalance of the 3 shoulder heads and / or when the rotator cuff is weak. I'd heavily recommend resting & taking ibuprofen or similar NSAID to take down the inflammation. After a week or 2 of rest I'd recommend starting rotator cuff strength exercises to strengthen & remove any RC imbalances.

Thanks for the replies and advice, have now got an appointment in less than a month, the pain is still there and the right shoulder too is playing up. I have tried resting more, but the gym is an addiction.

I’d agree with others and seek professional help. The 2 nd consultant I saw know exactly what was wrong and exactly what I should do about it. I had keyhole surgery on my right shoulder in 2009 to alleviate a compression (they shave the bone back and even give you a DVD of the camera pov ). My problem was caused (mostly) by an imbalance in my rear deltoids and scapu****s, which according to my surgeon is pretty common. He also told me that the surgery was to correct the symptoms and that I needed to address the imbalance, which of course I didn’t so now I’m back to square one. Shoulder injuries are very common to pretty much anyone who practises any sport that involves using the shoulders – comes with the territory. It’s the price we pay for having such a flexible joint. I’d also stress that you get this sorted asap or leave any pressing well alone. I ignored my shoulder pain for years and it’s one of my biggest gym regrets.
