Shoulder press - leaning back
18 November 2009 21:57
( permalink)
I tend to lean back arching my back inwards so I feel like I'm under the weight a bit, is this a major problem like arching your back doing deads?

I wouldnt say its a major problem but maybe the weight is too high for you if you cant get the correct form, could also do them sitting down on a bench to keep your back pinned in

Probably is case of me increasing it too much, I'll also try seated and see if it helps.

Sitting down stops the lean, I won't stop you from arching. What you need is to stand back and re assess. You're aiming to train you shoulders, yes? When leaning back you bring in other muscles to get the job done. Drop the weight and get the from tight. It may not be a problem now but if you hurt your lower back it will scupper pretty much all your training

Thanks mate it makes sense about bringing in other muscles as I feel like I've worked my lower back a bit after doing them.

When doing my shoulder presses used to sit straight up on the bench now i lean back and i find it takes the pressure off my lower back alot more, as i have a lower back injury, i just do each rep at a controlled pace to try and ensure my shoulder are used as much as i can.

Don't know why I struggle with such a simple lift, form was better but not perfect I could still feel myself arching my back in, dropped the weight down as well. Also tried seated but just felt strange.

You may well be tight through the lats. Remember you spend most of the day with your arms by your sides or just a little out in front of you.

Id say have the back support slightly leaning back from vertical but imagine you're trying to push your lower back into a nail thats been knocked into the back support. Its something that the physio taught me when i was bending fack to much atthe lower back when doing my shoudler rehab Rodge.

you need to find an incline bench to lean against. you can use a preacher bench or something like that, just turn around and face the other way. a lot of people do this to articially raise the weight they use as they bring their pecs into the movement too much. drop way way down on the weight and practice the form.

I always struggled a little with OHP, but I've made major improvements by re-setting the line I'm pushing through. I dropped with weight right down, focused on getting the shoulders right back and keeping the bar on the center line of my body. Before, I was pressing slightly in front which resulted in the lean back. A quite narrow stance helps too.
