I've been struggling to find some ski pants to fit around my fat arse - my solution is that I'd just wear some thermals, some of those tight running trousers-lycra things, some tracksuit bottoms and over the top wear some waterproof trousers. My girlfriend seems to think this is unsuitable and told me to go shopping again today. Can anyone who's ever been before tell me if my plan is doomed or whether it will work? I don't see what's wrong with it..

Dont forget that as well as warm they need to be tough because if you fall on a rock ski edge or anything like that will shred you to bits and then skiing with a gaping hole is hellish cold. What your describing will just shred if you stack it into a branch or something. Where you planning to ski? If its in Europe can prob pick them up cheaper in a shop here.

Get some snowboard pants instead, my Burton XXL's are plenty large enough to accomodate my "equipement" mate!! The snowboard asylumn and snow and rock stock decent snowboard brands as long as you dont mind forking out. I generally by from US retailers on ebay for snowboard gear and all of mine is baggy as hell!!

Well in that case as a beginner you definately want thick pants as you will be spending a lot of time on your arse. Do check out TK Maxx if not buy them here you will be able to find a decathlon pretty close which will provide you with the bits and pieces for pea nuts.

In. tk max now, sweet fa here. Do I have to gettid proper shiny type trousers, the ones that sound like tracksuits? There are some which feel more like normal trousers but are apparently water repellant - they any good?

Yeah as earlier posted your plan would have resulted in an awful miserable holiday - Again, as posted snowboard pants should have enough room to fit (what size are we talking here?) I can recommend foursquare 'boswell' pants as being very, very roomy. What you need is a decent pair of 10K/10K shell pants, and a base layer underneath if its cold but you may be fine with just shell pants. Base layer is important - needs to be moisture wicking else your gonna be pi55 wet through with sweat, look for HH or under armour cold gear compression pants. TK maxx have some alright gear in, where in the country are you as there may be a couple of decent places not to far away

Rasputin Dont know without looking at them look for names like TOG 24, North Face HH etc These are good http://www.cotswoldoutdoo.../124/group/134/level/3 £65 not too bad Cheers mate! Just bought that exact pair from Cotswold. They only had XXL and L left, thank **** for that. This what annoys me about shopping: XXL HH from Costwold are baggy, probably coulda done with an XL. XXL No Fear from Sportsdirect didn't even go halfway up my legs, probably coulda done with XXXXL.

iirc you're about 17st? you're going to pick up some right speed coming down the mountain! i went for the first time a couple of weeks ago, never been skiing at all. it took some getting used to but the 3rd day i was ready for coming down the main slopes rather than the training slope. first run i fell 18 times (yes i kept count!) 2nd run only 4 times, all about progression and be prepared for sore quads and glutes. you'l be at an advantage because you will have the strength to hold yourself up too.

Yeh about that, that doesn't bode well then! Ffs, I thought it was going to be really easy, and now everyone is telling me it's hard I'm a little bit scared

Just got back - had some group lessons, which after the first day were a waste of time and money - my advice for anyone in a similar situation is to get private lessons for a few hours and then figure the rest out for yourself - it's really not as hard as everyone makes out. That said I do have some nasty ice burn from falling 200m on my face down a black slope - ****ing Val d'Isere and its bad signposting

I think I may know the one you mean, was it close just below the ski park near the Mont Blanc/Semanmille lifts? If it's the same one and I remember correctly it's just called piste "G" and it's very easy to get onto by mistake, agree with the bad signposting comment. That said it's a good run when you've got a bit more experience, far from the worst black run in the world but not where you want to be as a beginner. APart from that how did you enjoy your skiing?

It's close to the ski park but not the one you're thinking of, I ended up going down epaule du charvel instead of santons because santons was closed (if only I knew any french I'd have understood the significance of the "santons (ferme) sign [:p] ) and on the map it doesn't make it clear that santons is a turn off from the epaule du charvel, so by the time I realised it was closed I was already 200m down a black and didn't have much choice but to continue. http://skimap.org/data/790/1/1325545805.pdf I was coping ok until I bounced over a mogul into another one and lost a ski, and then just fell and fell and fell! Was pretty scary. Other than that it was really fun - there's something pretty magical about just being in the mountains whilst doing a moderately fun activity - some of the scenery was unbelievable.

Gotcha, at least that's quite a short one and it led you back to a blue. First I went skiing I went to Chmonix and took a wrong turn onto a very icy red (only my second day ever on skis), came around a corner WAY to fast, did the splits, lost both skis and one of them shot into the queue at a chairlift. I got a right boll0cking in several languages when I went to get it. Didn't put me off as I've been back every year since, love it, especially sitting supping a jug of mulled wine late afternoon after a few good runs and then ambling down the last couple of slopes for a soak before a good meal and a few beers. Not a massive lover of the French but the certainly know how to cook, Chamonix is exceptional for local restaurants. I tend to go with mates and get a catered chalet nowadays, always got great food so far. We did one on Morzine 3 years ago and was very special.
