Skipping as a fat burner...

Hello, Just looking at different forms of cardio for fat burn (but to maintain muscle). I know the diet has alot to do with it before anyone says anything. Anyhow, I'm a pretty good skipper and was just curious to peoples opinions. Usually I've done HIT cardio (rowing) for approx. 20 mins at the end of a workout but I was wondering if 20 mins HIT Skipping at the end would be just as efficient? Also, would it be ideal to skip in the morning prior to breakfast or not? Thanks,

Skipping (if you can do it properly) is a fantastic form of cardio. I never really looked into it until I went to Australia and my cousin who boxes (I just caught up with him before a fight) was in GREAT condition and he was adiment it was because of the skipping he does! In Feb I took the time out to look at a few video's and learn how to do it properly (i.e. the different and best techniques) and even though I can still hardly last for more than a minute without a mistake, it's knackering!! Honestly mate, if you can do it I'd go for it. 10 minutes of that will really be a good way of altering the cardio during your weekly sessions.

I'm the don at skipping, its an amazing workout. When you get good, try crossover skipping and a double rope jump (where the rope swings under you twice before you touch the floor). Kills you, that and a bit of bag work. Good for CV and seems to keep my fat down.

Cheers, I'm a pretty good skipper, i can/could triple rope jump but never really tried the cross over. When do you usually do it? Have you found that doing it keeps your muscle levels up as well? (obviously diet dependant) cheers

I normally do a quick blitz at the end of weights for about 10-15 mins. Mix it up, double rope jump, couple of steps, crossover, repeat til collapse :) Bit of bags. I'm not a hugely muscley bloke, more lean, but no it doesn't affect my muscle or strength. I make sure I take in enough calories pre n post workout to cover it.

I skip till I'm struggling, then do some bag, more a couple of minutes on each with no rest. You could just do a light skip then blitz it, I wouldn't rest though not if its only 10-15 mins.

Yeah i wanted to get a bag. For Rowing HIT i do 200m blitz, 1 min rest x 10. I'll experiement. The bags are good, and i'll get one when i graduate.

When I used to box, we had to skip to the round timing clock/bell...3 minutes skip one minute rest....hands still at our sides, using the wrists to rotate the rope, which felt like a 20kg weight at the end of the session!

Just did 1 minute + 1 minute rest x 10, leather, weighted rope. My arms are physically dead and i'm feeling the lack of recent cardio!

I tried this last summer. I was really bad at it but prepared to practise and get better, but it messed my knees up big time!!! My wife said I was jumping with stiff legs which was to blame. I found I had to jump really high so I didn't get tangled up. I really wanted to do this as a form of HIIT so I might have another go at some point. Just don't want to mess my knees up again as I'm running every morning at the minute.

I would say I barely even jump, inches from the floor. You sound like you're jumping way too high. Sounds like you may have a crappy rope, Everlast leather from sugarays is a great rope. The better the rope, the easier it is, get the right length too.

Yeah, my feet barely leave the ground, did it in the dark yesterday so its all just getting a feel for the rope. When you get tired you get a bit rusty but in due course I will be able to do my 10 minutes without messing up. I've got the everlast weighted leather rope too. You can really feel it on your arms! Also, can you do the cross over etc?

I skip like the guy in the vid, but no where near that speed, I'm quick but not that quick. Yeah its a good rope. So yeah I crossover too.

at boxing we always do 3 mins skip 1 min break x5. do that a few times a week, works a treat.
