Does anyone on here incorporate this into their cardio routine and do you feel the benefits from it? Thinking about trying skipping as a quick cardio burning in the mornings as opposed to running all the time.

I add some skipping into circuits... X trainer - 5 mins Sit-ups - 20 reps Skipping - 5 mins KB Swings - 20 reps Bike - 5 mins Problem with skipping is technique as it is very stop start until you build up some skill and I find it quite hard on my shins too.

Like any type of cardio you can vary the intensities and work/rest ratios, and that is probably the best way to do it as well. Also google 'doubleunders' if you don;t know them already

Christ on a bike, battered out about 10 mins last night 'practicing' and I was blowing out my erse! I find running much easier but its a good extra cardio stint I can do anytime in the back garden, it will defo become part of my weekly routine.

Hi, I've been doing skipping regularly for my cardio work for a while now - best thing I've done. Not so punishing on the joints as running. Learning double-unders is key as these are pretty intense. Currently I do: 1. 10 mins warm up, gradually increasing speed. Then, 2. 100 double unders - takes about 1 minute 3. rest 2 mins 4. repeat 2 and 3 until half dead 5. spend 10-15 mins "freestyling" - learning new tricks etc. This is a fun part - it still keeps you going but you kind of don't notice it. By the time I finish this I am soaking with sweat. Beginners - skipping will hit your calves but they get used to it, and a good stretch beforehand is what I do. I have a couple of different ropes for varying the workout - a regular PVC speed rope, and a slightly heavier PVC speed rope, and a cable rope which is quite heavy. The heavier the rope the more it kills your shoulders - I have a different workout for the cable rope.

Skipping is quality for fat burning esp.with intervals eg,2mins on 30secs off completing 5 rounds and the more you do it the easier it becomes so make sure in the last round you try and add a new move eg,crossovers, split jumps etc, more calories burnt rather than wasting time on a 45mins run. plus i rather work harder in less time than pound my joints for a longer slow duration workout.

Skipping skills are still pretty low! Usually go for 90seconds on, 30seconds rest, repeat for as long as possible. Up to around 20 odd mins doing this which isn't bad, still kick the rope alot which is a pain but I think its down to my footwear.

I'm wanting to buy a skipping rope - would just any skipping rope be ok? Or are the weighted ones better? I'd probably need one with an adjustable length too. Anyone offer any advice?

I usually skip to failure. Or rotate legs in flight till one gives out. Great workout.

I tried skipping for a while, the only issue I had was that my knee because it's unstable after a bad accident I had at age 19-20y/o couldn't take the pounding. I have a speed rope which is great; one tip for anyone skipping is to jump as the rope passes overhead because by the time it gets to your feet you will have cleared it. Crossovers and backwards skipping are also great moves to incorporate, crossovers in particular. There are some excellent sites which instruct on how to adjust the length of the rope; I believe one is to stand on the rope, feet hip width apart, and pull the handles into the armpits...if it just fits, it's the right length for the person. There are minute differences, of course, and so it's best to cut off slightly less and keep adjusting until you have the optimum length for your height. Just Google search "skipping rope length" for some links.

A quick way to find the right length of skipping rope for you is to stand in the middle of the ropes with the handles pointing upwards, the handle tips should reach your arm pits. there is also a size guide for the length of rope to your height.., see below : 7ft rope - upto 4' 10" 8ft rope - from 4' 11" - 5' 5" 9ft rope - from 5' 6" - 6' 0" 10ft rope - from 6'1" - 6' 6" Some good quality ropes are not adjustable.., what most people do with these if the rope is too long is to tie a loose knot just below both handles until it feels right.
