Split Training vs Full Body Training 05 November 2009 22:15 (permalink)
Ive read so many conflicting articles in magazines and on the web saying that one form is better than the other. Although I am concentrating on fat burning, I also want to maintain my current muscle mass, maybe gain some lean muscle along the way.

Can someone please clarify which route I should be taking, hopefully based on some experience?

Many thanks.

I'm not a fan really of a complete bodypart split where u do 1 main muscle group a day, I think the frequency is too low.

U don't have to go the whole other way and do FBR there's also a middle-ground like push/pull/legs or upper/lower

In recent years I have have tended to switch, I do the 20 rep squat workout for 6 weeks and then my 3 day split for 2 months then switch back etc.
Sometimes life isn't the party we were expecting but since we're here we may as well dance

I much prefer split training, have tried FBW but didnt get nearly as good results from it, but as with the majority of things it will vary from person to person

          both are good...

for a beginner I'd tend to suggest full body - as you get more frequent practise at the important lifts in a shorter space of time

            All have their place

Whole body high weight low reps: good for 'keeping' muscle on a cut. Allows you to up frequency which is important.
Splits: means you can go to town on the body part but there's a long time for recovery (good in a low cal enviroment). Freq is low though. Hard to meaningfully go to town on say legs when cals are low though....
Upper lower split: Nice trade off between the two.

i found doing a full body kept my enthusiasm up because i was doing my fave exercises on a regular basis. i started on a push pull legs routine and found i was making all kind of excuses to get out of leg days.
not the best reason for doing them i know but this is just me.....

I think all have there own advantages and disadvantages you have to choose what work best for you. I prefer split training personally.

I found much better results when switching to 3 day split. To keep motivated on parts I least like training i.e. legs, I add shoulders to that day as I enjoy shoulder press.
