Splitting headache while training? 13 April 2011 12:23 (permalink)
Having slept too great for a couple of nights for various personal reasons so was feeling a bit under the weather but thought a good workout would help clear my head. Had a slightly thick head all morning which was a bit odd. Anyway did 30 mins SSCV to get the sweat going and still didn't feel too hot after that. Started on my shoulder routine and got to my maximum military press weight and all of a sudden I get a splitting pain in the back of my head, which really freaked me out. Was just like a splitting headache. Anyhow stopped training straight away and left gym. Came home and now just have a slightly dull head ache but nothing else. Any ideas what that was and is it anything to worry about? Does it warrant a GP visit?

Did you drop the bar? That'd hurt your head.

tbh i wish i had at least that would be on the outside rather than the inside of the head!!! My main worry is I ruptured a blood vessel or something not very clever...

Get to your GP or if at continues get to your local A&E mate, don't take any chances with something like this.
Your headache is possibly stress related, and that could put your blood pressure up, training at that point could be dodgy indeed. Try and rest/relax more before training mate.

Vince it's a good point, I did something I never do - laid on the bed closed the curtains this afternoon and was out like a light for 3 hours sleep. Unheard of for me to be able to sleep during the day normally and my head feels OK now. Hopefully will sleep well tonight and see how I am tomorrow but am going to give training a miss for tomorrow at least just to be on the safe side. If it happens again I am off to the GP though.

Similar to what i have had before although it is usually after doing Deadlifts, Squats etc which put the body under a load of stress. It came all of the sudden and having never had one before i seriously thought i was having a brain hemorrhage as the pain was so intense. They usually last no more than a minute and the pain increases with every heartbeat and after leaves a dull ache in the head for the remainder of the day. It's a shame as it wasn't just a one off thing, any time i exerted myself the intense pain came back, this lasted for nearly a month. Still not sure what triggered it, had it once more but it only continued for a few weeks. What you have may be different and it might be worth seeing a gp, i didn't bother but after plenty of research i found out that it was exertion headaches, very severe exertion headaches.

You've probably pulled a muscle in you neck. I did a few years ago and had wicked headaches for over a week till I went and got a neck massage which free'd everything off and sorted it out.

Same problem happened three days in a row. Saw my GP Tuesday afternoon and am in for an MRI scan tomorrow.  Came clean about the AAS use, I thought it would be a bit stupid not to considering she thought it was potentially serious enough to speak to a consultant neuro-surgeon during my appointment.

:S over a headache? Could be stress, lack of water, certain supplements...

I suffer from infrequent migraines and these are brought on by either 1) lack of food (blood sugar levels) 2) lack of water 3) sustained periods of high stress 4) exhaustion (sustained periods of little sleep), or more usually a combination of the above.

You were trying to lift with no fuel in the tanks (after 30mins SSCV) and already exhausted from a general lack of sleep. Everybody is different but that'd be enough to set a migraine off for me.

Hopefully it turns out to be nothing serious, but these weren't just ordinary headaches, they were splitting pain in a specific location at the back of my head and I am also getting a milder similar headache in the same place when I do any type of exertion e.g. making love with the girl and gardening, so I am happy that my GP thought it sensible enough to refer me. At least then anything serious can be ruled out. Better that than experience a ruptured aneurysm I guess, although I probably wouldn't be around to worry about it if that happened!!  Just wait for the results now.

Btw wierd thing having an MRI done, takes about 30 minutes of lying in that tunnel while you get zapped - it is like really loud techno being played at your head.

Thumper, that was interesting. I am going to try out some of those ideas as I am increasingly thinking that the pain has been caused by some sort of exertion headache. Although I am still waiting for the results of my MRI scan, after a couple of days off training my dull headache has gone and I have started training again and for the last couple of days so far so good.

I've had this happen to me a couple of times recently.

Once I was trying to blast out as many press ups as I could do in a minute without stopping, I was pumping away going pretty fast then bang. headache. The pain was something else. I thought I pulled a muscle in my traps at the top.

Yesterday, I was doing deadlifts, I've been doing a lot of one rep max stuff recently, seeing what I could max out too, then decided to drop right down and 5x5 them. Was on my second set on my 4th rep little head pain, did a 5th and bang, sat on the floor the pain was that bad shooting at the back of my head, thought I was about to pass out.

My training partner noticed I wasn't breathing properly which I've got a bad habit of doing. So I rested 5-10 minuites and managed to finished the sets off. Head still hurt but not to the same level, dull ache.

This morning my heads still hurting, sensitive to light etc like a migraine, after reading this thread and others figure its exertion headaches brought on my poor breathing.

So two occasions I've had it was both when pushing myself. Was a little worried but looks like its quite common.
