Standing workstation for my computer- is it healthier? 13 January 2012 19:14 (permalink)
I had suffered form hemmeroids from sitting down all day long day in day out.

So I tried migrating to my bed to sit when using the computer but this quickly gave me terrible back pains.

So the otehr day I decided to raise my computer setup to waist/eye level for a standing workstation.

Is this healthy (- for the record I work through the day prob around 10-12 hours per day taking short breaks through the day)? I read around and it seems quite a few others have done it and were singing its praises in terms of health benefits.

Although my legs have really been aching today I read someones article that this went away after a cpl of days.

Healthwise is it healthy to stand for ages like this? It seems the medics say anything is unhealthy for you- I certainly know from experience that sitting has caused me trouble in the backside so Im thinking if it isnt healthy to stand this will be a 'lesser evil'.

I certainly feel better standing up all day than I would sitting. Minus the leg pain my back and ass pains are gone and I feel much more alert.

Be interested to hear other's opinions on this who might know more about the body and health.

Internet marketing is my profession so I want to plan for the long haul as to what will be the most healthy work environment.

If the leg pain goes away after a few days I'll be happy but if not I am thinking I might have to do a hybrid of some sitting and some standing...I've been looking for the best butt saving seats and beanbags seem a good option (are they ok medically for posture?)...kneeling chairs seem stupidly expensive for just the piece of wood they are so not sure about those but the idea seems promising.

The answer probably lies somewhere inbetween. Sitting sometimes and standing others.

At the end of the day though, it's entirely personal - what works for you works for you and probably not for the next person.

we were designed to move, not sit or stand stil for long periods and so constantly moving would be the ideal.
However as someone who does sit at a desk a fair bit I would suggest you keep changing positions throughout the day, in fact every hour if possible, at least!

Then also get your physicality checked out for any underlying stresses you may have on internal structures.
Have a look at this sight www.imovefreely.com which is a self assessment and corrective exercise website specifically for those in static jobs or at desks

I work with a group of physios, their consultation rooms all have desks that move up and down on motors so they spend a significant amount of their time at their desks standing up.

As above it's kind of like food and nutrition, there's no one 'best' rather variety is key.
