Stuck with a load of Argos vouchers - best things to buy and sell on ebay?

We've finally got a payout from the insurance company after a break in and they've paid in one big Argos voucher.  We don't need most of the stuff anymore as I've either replaced it already or it's things we can live without (eg, camcorder we never used, satnav I don't use).

All we want is some cash to pay for a holiday as we're desperate for a break now.

I was going to sell the vouchers on ebay as I thought they'd come in smaller amounts but it's just one big one (over £1000).  No ones going to buy that so I'm thinking of buying some stuff and selling it on brand new on ebay.  I'll obviously lose a little bit of cash but I need to be clever and buy the kind of things that will sell.

It also makes sense to buy small items so I can post them.  My first thoughts are iPods, maybe the £300 iPod touches?

Anyone else got any ideas?

    Only problem is that ebay will absolutely rape you on charges. They will probably take about £100 so if someone offers you £900  you would only end up with £800.

    Depends if you would be happy with that

    Gumtree would be an alternative also as would the local ads papers.

    Failing that though iPods are a good one. I got some recently and was able to sell them fairly easily through gumtree. If they are brand new you might not lose as much as you think on them.

    This might be a bit random?

    But do argos do a credit card?

    If soooo, book a holiday with it blah blah and then pay it off with the voucher?

    They do have a card. Not sure you can pay using vouchers though!

    Yes but selling multiple ipod touches will if anything have you paying more ebay fees than a single voucher. I agree £1000 may be a bit hard to sell, see if you can go into argos and use the vouchers to buy say 5x£200 of vouchers?

    I've looked into the vouchers on ebay but this is worth £1200 and I can't imagine anyone buying it.  Plus it's not like a gift voucher like I thought it would be, it states it's an insurance replacement voucher.  They've also just told me on the phone I have to use it to replace electrical items as thats what was stolen.  So it's just a bit dodgy selling it onto someone as it may be hardwork to spend.

    I'll look into the credit card idea though.

    Your insurance company has paid you with an Argos voucher? You're ok with this?!? Is that in your terms?

    I'd of told them where to go if they'd pulled a stunt like that on me - unless every single thing that you claimed for was bought from Argos!?!?!

    They'll bulk buy vouchers at a discounted rate so your claim will cost them less...

    My first port of call would be calling the insurers and requesting cash/cheque, not vouchers. They do not have the right to restrict where you buy your replacement goods from - sned them to this page http://www.financial-ombu...epair-replace-cash.htm if they think otherwise. It is a ****ty scam on their part!!

    Some good info there Tony, I might give them a ring.  Yes, I just accepted the vouchers as I've had a ton of pain trying to get paid out in the first place.  Not sure if I can go back on this now I've accepted.

    Thing is, everything that was stolen can be directly replaced from Argos hence the vouchers.

    Not sure what to do next but I might put a call into the insurers to see.

    If they have stock possibly buy the Toshiba BDX2000 Bluray player.

    Not the best player in the world, but it comes with a voucher for 12months Lovefilm Rental. This is normally £7.99 a month as it is the 4 discs a month deal.

    The player is £99.99.

    Got one yesterday but had another reserved and didn't check other stores. My Dad is having the player for £50, and we're having the rental for £50 so a little over a pound a rental but with the flexibility of the post scheme.

    I'd think you could make a tenner at least by selling them on eBay?

    Awesome pic, but Tony you're not doing yourself many favours posting up tips on preventing the gag reflex and then a picture of a guy touching his toes - Ak

    Get on the phone to insurers, once someone has your case open ask to speak to a line manager/supervisor right away;

    tell him that you felt rail-roaded into accepting the vouchers given what you say about tricky getting a payout;

    tell him that you have since learned that vouchers dictate where you will shop, and this is no in line with an insurance payout;

    ask him to highlight where in your terms and conditions it says you can be payed in vouchers;

    if it is in your terms and conditions tell him that this should of been made abundantly clear when signing up for the policy, as it is by no means a regular payment method;

    tell him that you want to return the vouchers, and receive a cheque or bank transfer, if they are not compliant you will take it to the financial Onbudsman, where you will not only be telling them that you need cash not vouchers, but that you were mis-sold your insurance policy on the grounds than the payment method was ambiguous and not properly explained;

    Put simply insurance companies + mis-sold policy = trouble. They will typically go through hell and high water to avoid this happening as they get penalised heavily for anything that the Onbudsman has to do.

    At the end of the day you are entitled to money, not vouchers. That is what your insurance policy is for. You are simply standing up for your rights.

    I bought a laptop from Dixons last year and it packed in so I claimed on insurance.

    They offered me a replacement or an 'options card' which is redeemable in loads of big stores. Maybe you should ask about that, or even better a pre paid credit card.

    As Tony said, unless you bought all the items from argos then its a massive piss take

    We had a similar thing some years back claiming for a carpet we had damaged. The guy came round, checked the type of carpet then told us the same type was on half price sale in Carpet Right so that would be the price per sqm we were entitled to!! They tried to get us to buy it from there but I insisted on a cheque for the value as we wanted a better quality than they sold. They obliged!

    My insurance company were good with me. When they gave me the options card they said "Spend it how you want, you don' have to buy another laptop if you don't want"

    I was tempted to buy 550 boxes of M&S jaffa cakes but decided against it
