Subway, good, bad or ok?
12 January 2012 17:59
( permalink)
Wheat bread footlong, chicken tikka, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and jalapenos and a little mayo is my usual if I have one. But is any of the ingredients healthy? They have calorie counts with some of their sandwichs, but I don't choose what's on the menu, so wanted to know on a scale of 1-10 how healthy subway is in general, but specifically my sandwich of choice

No food's unhealthy in the context of a whole diet. You can have an unhealthy diet. In short, eat your subway and enjoy life. As Lyle McDonald says "Don't exclude the middle".

jj1981 - from my sandwich of choice, what in it would you consider crap? It's chicken, salad, on wheat bread with a little mayo :-) I assume you're referring to the usual subway sandwiches, which I don't have.

Can't see much wrong with a chicken and turkey sub, lots of greens and a tiny bit of light mayo on wheat - trust me there is a lot, lot worse fast food chains out there.

Largely processed but as said, in the context of a healthy balanced diet a subway treat is hardly a big sin and probably healthier than many other alternatives

I have it on the days were I simply can't be a.sed to cook dinner, which isn't often. But it's nice to know that on the day when I do, I'm not eating utter crap ;-)

Im sure i remember reading there is a high salt count in most subway subs , but as said above a lot better than burger or pizza . Your sub dont look to bad but is the tikka sauce cream based? +the mayo could make it quite a high fat content.

Bolt77 - tikka isn't cream based and it's very little mayo Question asked, question answered = fark it, I like the occasional sub and my diet is pretty solid rest of the time and where's the harm in treating yourself once in a while or just when you're being lazy Thanks chaps

I saw a programme on TV about sandwich shops and which were the worst, subway came out the winner as in the winner of being the worst in terms of salt - it's rammed full of the stuff apparantly. I've never had a subway before but keep meaning to have one! lol

now and then its not going to do any harm at all. and i would put money on it being a better alternative than a mcd's or kfc, by a good margin. they are tasty as well, so enjoy it now and then IMO. you have to have enjoyable food now and then, because well its enjoyable and tasty.

Turkey and chicken ones are probably not that bad if you go without sauce or mayo. But i wouldnt make it a habbit. Not really sure about the rolls, they are all prob the equivalent of white bread.

You're not kidding, there are times where I dread a meal because its the same old or just plain, well plain boring. So a good subway helps make it worth it and is a preferred substitute on the days when I just can't be a.sed to cook
