Suddenly unable to move files into new folders on work laptop running XP. Any advice?

As stated above, the laptop I use for work-related stuff (no downloads etc) has suddenly stopped allowing me to move files into folders. This started a few weeks ago but now is causing problems because I basically have every file in one folder which is a quagmire! I've tried system restore. No joy. Ay advice?

Tried an alternative to Windows Explorer in case there is a problem with that? Cmd line copying, or a GUI alternative?

essex_chris Tried an alternative to Windows Explorer in case there is a problem with that? Cmd line copying, or a GUI alternative? I don't even know that means, chris, so no is the short answer! I use firefox for web-browsing but the problem I am encountering is moving jpegs and word docs to new folders for organisational purposes.

So you can't copy and paste the files?

The_Lone_Wolf So you can't copy and paste the files? Didn't think about that, wolf. Good idea, I'll try now!

copy and paste seems to work which is something. Thanks, wolf. I didn't even know it was possible to transfer files that way!

SO when you try and move them - how are you doing it? Dragging and dropping the icons? Do you get an error?

Incidentally, chaps, is there a way make it that my files always show in "list" mode rather than "thumbnails"? Everytime I click back it automatically changes the view mode from list to thumbnail, which is annoying the heck out of me!

Might be worth doing a spyware/crap check - sounds like the kind of frustrating crap that comes along with some of them.

Have you played with the windows settings, or is your pc a work pc that get group policy from a domain at work? Drag and drop is an object that can be turned on or off via menu, GPO or Registry key Menu is the simplest way. see below 1) RIGHT click on start button 2) select Properties 3) in "Taskbar and start menu properies" select the "Start Menu" Tab 4) Select "Customize" (doesnt matter if you are using the classic or general style) 5)Click on advance and scroll to search "Enable Drag and drop" 6) Uncheck it 7) Click Apply...

So when you try it simply nothing happens? Got to be worth a check for spyware, give Spybot and Malwarebytes both a try

Yeah, I'm trying to run my McAfee spyware scan but it's not working. Presumably something is stopping it from working. Do you chaps have any advice on getting my laptop tuned up? I use it everyday for work (mainly word processing and general net browsing). As I use it exclusively for wrok-related stuff (and checking MT!) I don't use it AT ALL to download or visit riskee website, still, however, it is slow as feck. I formatted it a couple of months ago and so it is faster than it was prior to that but it's still pretty slow.

Yeah, go to piriform.com, download the CCleaner and Defraggler. Run CCleaner first to clean out all the old sh1te like cookies and temp internet cache then run Defraggler on the C Drive to get the Disk I/O back to what it should be. 99% of times its disk O/I before Memory utilisation or CPU load Jay
