Suspected rotator cuff injury 09 March 2010 13:50 (permalink)
Hi guys,

Just need some advice, Last week i injured myself at work and went to see a Dr and he said it was a likely rotator cuff tear.  I have completely stopped training alltogether except for cardio and i'm on light duties at work.  Due to the shambles the NHS is I have to wait 6 weeks for an appointment to see a specialist.

My worry is that i will lose all my muscle mass and strength which I need as i'm a pro wrestler and im advertised for my size etc so im worried about the effect this will have.

I am keeping my calorie intake high and still going with protein shakes and keeping my diet clean.  Is there anything else that I can do to minimise loss of mass during this time?  exercises etc?

Your help would me much appreciated.

You can still train around a rotator cuff injury. Avoid any exercises that cause you pain (which ones are problematic in this case?), warm your shoulders up properly before training and look into some mobility and prehab work.

hi mate, well it wont stop you training legs, and possibly arms on a restricted program, so that will help.

      what happened to injure it?

Lifted something at work and felt it go.  Went to the doc's straight away.

Still doing legs and deadlift and will se how arms go later on this week.

If you felt it go then it'll likely be a strain or tear then.

Anything that hurts, avoid like the plague. Anti-inflammatories if the pain gets particularly bad, work on getting the painful movements more mobile once it starts to subside. Very very light resistance stuff depending on what muscle you've damaged once you have good mobility back.

Have you tried db rows or seated cable rows? They 'might' not effect the RC too much...

Pretty much anything you do with your arms will be assisted by your RC in some way. Things like deadlifts, rows and training doing 'anything that doesnt hurt' are likely to still be placing stress on the area and delaying recovery.

Considering you've had no scans or by the sounds of it propper tests, I wouldnt really do much.
Once you really know whats wrong, you can look at sorting it out.

Sorry to sound a bit gloomy, but bearing in mind the injury is unknown, how do you known that something might make it worse. Espcially considering it could put the wrestling at stake.
