Swimming while muscles recover 28 January 2012 04:39 (permalink)
I own a bar in Thailand and we have a massive pool which I've not used since joining up a gym. I'm just pushing weights. I just do Breast Stroke when I swim. I want to do some swimming as I'm on a steroid cycle bored of people saying your looking pretty big, working out hard? You need to work out on your belly mate lol! As even though I'm eating clean I'm stiff forcing more calories down than usual.
I hate cardio but I know I need to do some to burn some fat. I love swimming though. But will Swimming effect my muscle recovery in anyway? I do Weights 4 times a week Mon, chest Tues Back, Thurs Shoulders and Friday legs. How many times a week should I swim if its OK to do so to burn fat and also for how long as I don't want to loose any muscle gained. I try jogging back from the gym on occasional days and once a week I go at the punch bag for 10 mins, but I'm quite unfit and for some reason swimming I can go on for an hour non stop.
Thanks

    swimming will be fine.

say swim 10-15 minutes after your gym session. I find this good for cooling muscles down after a session.
On non trianing days say go twice a week for 45 minutes.

See how it goes really with your fat loss. These should reasonanle burn a extra 1,000-1,500 kcals a week. So no rapid fat loss but should help a few weeks/months with out causing your muscle gains much issue.

Where's the bar in Thailand?  I'm up there from time to time.

I find swimming good for recovery and back stroke is very good for the shoulders.

Crawl also gives your legs a rest (done with correct form), breast stroke can be hard on the hips and knees.

Thanks guys. My Bar is in Pattaya, its in between the main part of Pattaya basicly where all the night clubs and go go bars are (walking Street) and Jomtien Beach.
Its called View Talay 1. And its the Swimming Pool Bar

I've read one of the 'Need a Routine' Thread and looking and the get ripped one, i'm doing 10gs of protein when I wake up then go for a swim/Jog or stair run 16 floors as much as I can (cant do 40 mins of that though thats f*cking hard work lol) then after my swim etc I get a nice Thai meal cooked for me from my great staff as I leave the pool with extra meat (chicken or Beef) and less rice and plenty of vegtables. Then 2 hours later a protein shake then my normal diet that I cook myself.

You should be able to eat super clean in Thailand too. If you just keep the coconut milk in check the fish, meat and frest veg og Thai food is excellent - even the cocnut milk is ok when you consider the lack of dairy and grain - it all balances out.

Swimming will be fine, cardio (the kind done by bodybuilders) does not affect muscle rest or growth - in fact, a bit of cardio of any type increases fitness and the general efficiency of the body -  and should improve the body's ability to recover, grow and metabolise.
