TV Won't Work After Digital Switchover!!!! 05 December 2009 21:06 (permalink)
Evening all

I have an LG 32LG200 TV. The apartment I live in doesn't have a roof aerial, so for the last 6 months I've run it on an internal - which used to pick up all digital channels no problem.

Now since last week ....NOTHING!! ....any idea's what I need to do --- except pay for an external aerial which I don't fancy forking out for! ;)

I'm not on freeview but I heard something about retuning. I would check out some official site for guidance - switch over

Did you rescsan for channels? ##
do they have weaker signals or something then??

When all else fails, drag the TV round to someone elses house and see if it will work at thiers.  That way you will know if its the TV or your Signal/Arial.

Possibly the switchover has taken out a mast near to you which means you may have to re-align your internal aerial to another, which will be more powerful.

wasnt even aware that the switchover happened.

as of a few days ago, my bbc2 and channel 5 stopped working, came up a virgin media message on those channels saying theyve stopped the analogue siagnal. Didnt even know thats where I was getting my signal from.

Ive had my TV for around a year and have never be able to use the freeview on it as Ive never had an aerial, tried the indoor ones but they didnt work.

Im contemplating shelling out for Sky HD or Virgin HD, bit of a rip off if you ask me though. At least I know why 2 of my channels stopped working now though.

you might need a new freeview box as  i remember it said on the news at the time of the switch over that some boxes would stop working hundreds of people had boxes that did not work

It may be that they have not fully ramped the digital signal up yet, because it runs at a lower rate than analogue as they interfere with each other, so they may need to up it when all the old masts have gone down.  As I say it might need realignment, we have two near us and the mast I am pointing at does not have the full selection of MUX's therefore I don't get Dave, Film4 and a few others too boot.  Without getting on the roof (don't have a ladder) I can't really do anything about it at present.

You will probably have to invest in a new aerial, for all the good will in the world indoor aerials are not very good unless specifically high gain for digital.  Another thing to bear in mind in mind is how old the cable is, because this breaks down over time as well!!

Glad to see were not the only ones affected by this!

Ours went down on the day of the digital switch over. me and my father are quite tech savvy, so we went about sorting it.

First of all - trid re-tuning. Nothing at all.

We then decided to try a brand new aerial (this thing was massive), new cable, and new master socket. So we went out, got all this. We tried it first by literally getting on the roof of the house with the aerial, running it down with a new cable straight into the back of the main TV. Nothing at all, we tried allsorts of sky positions.

TBH its like we have been EMP'd - or a signal blocker has bene installed for that range of frequency. All the neighbours are on Sky so they dont know either way.

We gave up in the end, we have called an engineer out to visit tomorrow. Very keen to see what he says is wrong.

Sounds like a right pain in the arse. I've never been able to get a decent freeview signal using an internet aerial - even in a strong signal area.

Much as it'll annoy you i have to say i think you were lucky to have got a signal before - it could be many many things that have affected your signal pickup now not just the changeover - inclined to say that it was bound to happen sometime.

You could try fitting your own aerial inside - test it and then bolt it to the wall outside yourself. It's actually quite easy to do and you don't need to pay somebody to come and do it for you
Awesome pic, but Tony you're not doing yourself many favours posting up tips on preventing the gag reflex and then a picture of a guy touching his toes - Ak

Surely an aerial extension can't cost that much?

as of a few days ago, my bbc2 and channel 5 stopped working, came up a virgin media message on those channels saying theyve stopped the analogue siagnal. Didnt even know thats where I was getting my signal from.
Virgin Media sent out letters months ago saying that they were closing down the analogue cable TV network starting Dec '09 and that they were upgrading customers to digital cable TV. You have to phone Virgin and arrange for your free upgrade.

Watch out, though. Virgin slapped £30 on my bill. When I phoned them, they admitted their mistake and took it off again. They did the same to my neighbour.
